USMMA Men, Susquehanna Women Roll to Landmark Conference Titles

The Susquehanna women and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men both won the first event of the meet Friday evening and never trailed as they went on to claim the 2013 Landmark Championships on Sunday.

The Susquehanna women claimed their third straight title to even the score with Scranton in six years of Landmark swimming. The team combined to win six individual events and all five relays to finish with 803 points, a conference record. Scranton finished second with 666.5 points and Catholic came in third place with 475.5 points.

Sunday’s events began with the 1650 freestyle and Marywood, Katie Paterson won the event in 18:01.65. Susquehanna’s Lexi Cole took home her third individual title after winning the 200 backstroke in a pool record time of 2:07.93. Catholic’s Julia Wisler set a meet and pool record in the 100 freestyle, winning the event for the second year in a row. She finished in 53.43 seconds.

Scranton’s Alexis Walsh edged teammate Paige Agnello to win the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.85 and Devin Lessard won the 200 butterfly in 2:05.19, a meet and pool record. Lessard also became just the second woman in Landmark history to win an individual event four times and the first since Catholic’s Lisa Brooks won the 100 and 200 breaststroke from 2008-11.

The women wrapped up the day with the 400 freestyle relay. Susquehanna won the event with a time of 3:38.46 to set a new conference record and finish with all five relay victories.

On the men’s side, USMMA maintained their stronghold on the Landmark, claiming their sixth straight championship. The Academy won eight individual events and four relays to accumulate 924 points, a new conference record. Susquehanna finished second with 631 points and Scranton finished third with 575 points.

The Mariners’ Jordan Cripe won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:22.45 to set a new meet and pool record. Teammate Kevin Lindgren won his third individual event by taking home top honors in the 200 backstroke with a new conference and pool record time of 1:46.70.

Susquehanna’s Josh Heller won the 100 freestyle for the second year in a row in 46.17 seconds to set a meet and pool record while Chadd Lee won the 200 breaststroke in a meet and pool record time of 2:05.32.

Goucher freshman Morgan Richter won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.70.

The Academy wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:05.24, another conference record.

The All-Conference performers and major award winners will be announced on Tuesday.
