The University of California-Berkeley women's performance at the US National Championships led all teams - men or women - with the only 1000+ point score. Melissa Franklin, Elizabeth Pelton and Celina Li. The Arizona men's performance at the Texas Invitational was similarly impressive. Through the fall, the Wildcat's Kevin Cordes has posted the only 1,100 point time - representative of a US Open record. Cordes wasn't alone in posting impressive times however. Giles Smith, Mitch Friedemann, and Michael Meyer all posted 1,000+ point scores to give the Wildcats the edge over defending NCAA Champion Michigan.
Thus far eight teams have posted average scores above the 2014 predicted NCAA Qualifying Standards. On the women's side USC, Standford, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, Virginia and Arizona have multiple swimmers (irrespective of relays) in the meet. On the men's side Michigan, Florida, USC, Texas, Louisville, Georgia and California head into their respective conference championships with semi-complete NCAA squads.
The ranking accounts for teams' top performances over the preceding semester and is the only objective ranking of swimming for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, and NJCAA. The rankings utilize a new point system based on a 1,100 point scale. The new scale uses NCAA time standards and a percentile ranking of all times over the past four years.
