Centennial Championships - Day 3

Sophomore Elizabeth Miskiel (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) finished fourth in both breaststroke events to lead the Washington College women's swim team at the Centennial Conference Championships, held Friday, yesterday, and today at Gettysburg College. The Shorewomen finished seventh of eight teams in the final team standings.

Miskiel's fourth-place time of 2:28.64 in the 200 breaststroke was a Washington College season-best and made her the Shorewomen's third-fastest swimmer ever in the event. Her fourth-place time in the 100 breaststroke was 1:09.71; she swam a WC season-best 1:09.04 in the preliminaries of the event. She also added a 13th-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.54 after swimming a WC season-best 2:17.80 in the preliminaries.

Miskiel joined senior Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), sophomore Hilary Badger (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales), and freshmanAlicia Howard (Wilmington, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) for a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay - the Shorewomen's top relay finish. Their time of 1:41.98 was a WC season-best.

Badger added a 10th-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.10 after swimming a WC season-best 1:02.97 in the preliminaries. She was 12th in the 50 freestyle in 25.56 after swimming a WC season-best 25.41 in the preliminaries.

Junior Sarah Sykes (Haworth, NJ/Northern-Valley Demarest) finished 10th in the 200 butterfly in a WC season-best 2:18.68 to become the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the event. She placed 11th in the 400 individual medley in 4:54.56 after becoming the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event with a WC season-best 4:54.39 in the preliminaries. She also finished 16th in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best 5:27.25.

Junior Allison Kvien (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.16 and 15th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:40.07. Freshman Ashley Maurizi (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) placed 14th in the 1650 freestyle in a WC season-best 19:10.81. She also swam a WC season-best time of 2:01.74 in the 200 freestyle, finishing 18th in the preliminaries. Howard took 13th in the 200 backstroke in 2:17.19 after swimming a WC season-best 2:17.11 in the preliminaries. She was also 16th in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.52.



Freshman Greg Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) medaled in both butterfly events and three school records fell as the Washington College swim team competed in the Centennial Conference Championships Friday, yesterday, and today, at Gettysburg College. The Shoremen finished sixth of seven teams in the final team standings.

Lee won a silver medal in the 100 butterfly in 51.50 after swimming a Washington College season-best time of 50.98 in the preliminaries, missing the school record by three one-hundredths of a second. He took bronze in the 200 butterfly in a WC season-best 1:56.05, becoming the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. In the 200 individual medley, Lee took fifth in a WC season-best 1:57.82 to become the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He also led off the 200 freestyle relay with a WC season-best 21.63 50-freestyle time to become the Shoremen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in the 50 freestyle and led off the 400 freestyle relay with a WC season-best 48.29 100-freestyle time to become the Shoremen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 freestyle.

Freshman Austin Yocum (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) placed fifth in the 1650 freestyle in a WC season-best 16:59.76 to become the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in the event. He broke the school record in the 500 freestyle with his 11th-place time of 1:47.07 and he added a 14th-place finish in the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best 1:47.07 to become the Shoremen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

Freshman James Ray (Lutherville, MD/Towson) broke the school record in the 100 backstroke by leading off the 400 medley relay in 53.93. In the actual 100 backstroke event, Ray was ninth in 55.05. He was 11th in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 2:01.32 to become the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He placed 16th in the 50 freestyle in 22.35.

Ray, senior Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley), Lee, and Yocum broke a 14 year-old school record in the 200 medley relay by finishing fourth in 1:36.52.

Auger placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 1:00.12 and was ninth in the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best 2:13.32 to become the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

Senior Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersbiurg) placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.98 and became the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 breaststroke by placing 11th in 1:01.47.

Sophomore Tad Derrick (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) placed 16th in the 1650 freestyle (18:06.94) and 14th in the 400 individual medley (4:32.25). His time in the 1650 freestyle made him the Shoremen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Sophomore Robert Mix (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) placed 14th in the 1650 freestyle in 17:45.81 to become the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Sophomore Daniel Seidleck (Crofton, MD/DeMatha Catholic) took 15th in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.17, while junior Robert Homer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was 16th in the same event in 1:01.27. Freshman Steven Bilinski (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) became the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 butterfly with a17th-place time of 2:06.38 in the preliminaries.

Two other Shoremen relays finished in the top five. Lee, Ray, Bilinski, and Yocum were fifth in the 200 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 1:27.70. Ray, Auger, Lee, and Yocum were 5th in the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best 3:32.16.



Bryan Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) led off the 200 free relay on Friday night, keying the first of two program-record performance to lead McDaniel at the 2012 Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming championship hosted by Gettysburg on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror amassed 161 points over the three days to finish seventh. Gettysburg easily won its 10th title with 846 points, outdistancing Dickinson by 222 points.

Jesse Mills (Catonsville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph), James Eu (Reston, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) and Patrick Rogers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) joined Nuckles on the record-setting 200 free relay that finished seventh with a time of 1:28.46.

Nuckles anchored the 200 medley relay, joining Stephen Hoyt (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), Eu and Mills to finish seventh with a time of 1:38.51, setting a new program record in that event as well.

Nuckles also led off the 400 free relay, teaming with Rogers, Hoyt and Eu to finish seventh in a time of 3:6.83, which is third on the program's all-time list.

Nuckles added a ninth-place individual showing in the 50 free with a time of 21.60 seconds after qualifying for the B-finals with a 15th-place showing in the preliminaries (21.97).

He was also 13th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.61 in the finals and 22nd overall in the 100 butterfly. Despite not swimming in the fly finals, he still turned in a time of 56.21, which ranks ninth all-time.

Hoyt now ranks second all-time in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke. He finished 12th in the fly with a time of 53.98 and 10th in the back with a time of 2:00.53.

He also placed 14th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.19. Despite a 15th-place finish in the morning preliminaries, Hoyt actually swam a faster time. His time of 2:00.66 in the prelims ranks fifth all-time.

Rogers moved up to third place on the all-time performer list for the 500 free with his 13th-place time of 4:51.10 in the preliminaries. He dropped to 15th in the finals with a time of 4:52.89.

Rogers is also now fourth in the 200 free after a 12th-place time of 1:46.08 in the prelims. He finished 12th in the finals with a time of 1:46.71. He also just missed the finals of the 100 free but is now seventh all-time with a time of 49.53.

Mills was 13th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.51, which ranks fourth all-time.

Eu rounded out top-10 all-time performances with a 15th-place time of 1:02.37 in the 100 breaststroke prelims. He finished 16th with a time of 1:03.08 in the finals.

Andrew Widmann (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) was 14th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.08). Erik Brennan (Sicklerville, N.J./Sterling) just missed the finals in the event, placing 17th in a time of 1:04.63.

Jono Leafblad (Garnee, Ill./Warren Twp.) finished 15th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.28.

Jason Harder (Philadelphia, Pa./Pennington) rounded out the weekend's individual events for McDaniel, finishing 15th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.42.

Mills, Odierno, Leafblad and Widmann were seventh in the 800 free relay with a time of 8:04.63.



Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) brought home her third career gold medal in the 100 breaststroke to lead McDaniel to a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming championship hosted by Gettysburg on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror set a new program best for points scored at the CC championship meet with 380.5 points, besting the 2004 total of 364 points. Gettysburg won its 13th crown with a the fewest points ever scored by the winning team (635.5). Franklin & Marshall was second (597.5) while Ursinus (537) and Swarthmore (527) were third and fourth, respectively. Dickinson rounded out the top five with 494 points.

In addition to the record number of points for McDaniel, three new program records were established while two more records were within one-quarter second of falling and no fewer than 19 all-time top-10 performances were achieved. In addition to Walega's gold, the Green Terror also nabbed three silver medals and two bronzes. The six total medals were the most since 2004.

Walega advanced to the 100 breaststroke finals as the top seed, swimming a time of 1:07.21 in the prelims before winning the event with a time of 1:08.02.

Walega was also part of record-setting performances by both medley relays, joining Kerrie Vanscoy (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), Brittney Lenz (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Emma Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) for a pair of silver medals.

The quartet swam to a time of 4:11.31 in Friday's night's 400 medley relay finale before opening Saturday night's session with a time of 1:49.48 in the 200 medley relay.

Walega and Duesterhaus also teamed with Abbie Schickler (Montgomery Village, Md./Covenant Life) and Mariel Ramey (Framingham, Mass./Keystone National) to finish fourth in the 200 free relay on Friday night, turning in a time of 1:40.28 to place second all-time.

The same quartet – albeit in a different order – was sixth in the 400 free relay, closing the weekend with a time of 3:42.16 to nab second on that performance list as well.

Walega was also sixth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.94.

Duesterhaus bettered her own program record to earn bronze in the 50 free. After qualifying for the A-final seventh in a time of 25.00 seconds, she bettered that time by 0.3 seconds to finish third in 24.70. The sophomore added an individual silver in 100 backstroke with a time of 59.39, missing her own program-best mark by 0.16 seconds.

Ramey made it a 2-3 finish in the shorter backstroke race, improving her place by one position from the prelims to take bronze in a time of 1:01.42, which is now third all-time.

Duesterhaus had the weekend's other near miss for another record, missing her own 100 free record by 0.21 seconds. She finished sixth in the event with a time of 54.54 seconds.

Jessica Fry (St. Mary's, Ga./Camden County) closed her career with a trio of top-three all-time individual performances. She finished fifth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:54.97, become only the second Green Terror swimmer ever to break 18 minutes in the event.

She was also fifth in the 500 free, improving to third on the all-time list with a time of 5:13.36.

With a time of 4:46.52 in the prelims of the 400 IM, she moved into third place all time. Fry lost 0.02 seconds in the finals but still placed fourth.

Fry was also part of the 800 free relay, which finished sixth in a time of 8:10.23. The senior joined Lexie Jacobs (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford), Ramey and Schickler to rank fourth all-time.

Fry was also part of the 400 free B-relay with Vanscoy, Kerrin Holmes (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) and Casey McCole (Hanover, Pa./South Western) that was 14th but cracked the top-10 all-time. Their time of 3:50.73 ranks ninth.

That wasn't the only B-relay to earn a spot on the top-10 list.

The 400 medley relay of Ramey, Schickler, Jacobs and Holmes was fourth all-time with its 13th-place time of 4:11.31.

The 200 free relay of McCole, Lenz, Fry and Ramey was 12th was fifth all-time with its 12th-place time of 1:43.65 – a time which was better than two squad's A-relays.

Ramey placed fifth in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a time 2:12.38 to rank second all-time.

In the 50 free, she turned in a time of 25.53 in the prelims, which is seventh all-time. She finished 14th in the finals with a time of 25.65. In the same event, Walega finished 18th, missing the finals, but her time of 25.61 is ninth on the program's all-time list.

Jacobs turned in three all-time top-10 performances. With a 14th-place time of 2:17.74 in the 200 IM prelims, she moved into fifth place on that list. Jacobs finished in the same position in the finals with a time of 2:18.64.

Jacobs finished ninth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:51.35, which is fifth all-time, improving from 10th place during the prelims.

Jacobs was the first swimmer to miss the finals of the 200 butterfly, finishing 17th with a time of 2:25.04, which is eighth in program history.

Lenz and Schickler each moved into the all-time top-five in one event.

Lenz finished the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.44 to finish 14th while Schickler completed the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:36.05 to place 13th. Lenz improved one position from the prelims while Schickler dropped a position despite shaving 1.34 seconds off her prelim time.

Schickler was also ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.56) after qualifying in 11th position. She also placed 20th in the 200 IM but moved into ninth place on the all-time list with her time of 2:19.89.

Vanscoy rounded out the consolation finalists for McDaniel. She was ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.14) and 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:16.59).
