Shark Invite - Day 2

The Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams wrapped up day two of the third annual Shark Invitational Saturday at the NSU Aquatic Center. The women are in first place with a score of 434 points. The men are in third place behind Florida Southern and Tampa with 324 points.
 
The women kicked off tonight’s finals with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Kimba Collymore ( Sr., St. James, Trindad), Linea Cutter (So., Coral Springs, Fla.), Ashley Bransford ( Jr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) and Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Cheasapeake, Va.) finished third with a time of 1.37.49. The men’s “B” relay of Jim Shelley (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.), Addison Cates (So., Port Charlotte, Fla.), Thomas Aycart (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Michael Zislin (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) came into the wall in sixth place with a time of 1:27.74.
 
Erin Black (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.) claimed her second victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.01, which broke her own Shark Invitational meet record and gave her a NCAA “A” qualifying time. Black was joined in the “A” final by teammate Zielinski, who came in fourth place with a time of 5:01.98. Four more Sharks competed in tonight’s “B” final with Jessica Rocheleau (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) leading the pack with a time of 5:06.32, which landed her at 11th place. Following her were teammates, Kelsea Smith (Sr., Edina, Fla.) who placed in 17th, Sara Akoubian (Jr., Run Dacala, Ga.) who placed 19th and following right behind her in 20th was Cutter (So., Coral Springs, Fla.).
 
On the men’s side, Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) crushed his own Shark Invitational record with a time of 4:28.16.Norstrand was joined in the “A” final by teammates Florian Mehlan  (Jr., Moers, Germany) who placed fifth with a time of 4:34.80 and Cates who followed right behind for sixth place with a time of 4:35.22 and John Michael Hayes (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) who finished ninth with a time of 4:39.09. All men had NCAA “B” qualifying times in the event. In the “B” final, the Shark men took the top-two spots with Chris Norris (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) finishing 11th and touching out teammate Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.), who followed behind in 12th place.
 
In the 200-IM, Lauren Chapple (So., London, England) was the top finisher in the event with a time of 2:09.15, which was good enough for third place. Following right behind Chapple were teammates Sammy Akoubian (Jr., Run Dacala, Ga.) and Collymore, who placed sixth and seventh with times of 2:10.72 and 2:11.01, respectively. Miranda Schumes(Fr., Bloomington, Ind.) was the top qualifier in the “B” final with a time of 2:14.01, which landed her at the 13th spot.
 
In the men’s 200-IM, the Sharks were stacked in the “B” final with four swimmers competing. Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.) was the top Shark in the event with a time of 1:58.05, which landed him at 14th place. Pfahler was followed directly by Patrick Hayes (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) for 15th place, Chambers followed in 17th and Hayes rounded out the group coming into the wall for 20th.
 
In the women’s 50-yard freestyle, Collymore was the squad’s top finisher in the “A” final with a time of 24.72, which was good enough for seventh place. Cutter followed right behind Collymore in eighth place with a time of 24.77. In the “B” final, Zielinkski was top finisher in the final with a time of 24.58. Alexandra Zatylny (Jr., Quebec, Canada) came into the wall next for 12th place, Bransford finished closely behind in 14th place and rounding out the final was Emma Lawrenz(So., Minnetonka, Minn.) who finished in 17th place.
 
On the men’s side, Santiago Pombo (So., Bogotá, Columbia) is the lone qualifier in the event. Pombo finished 14th place with a time of 21.56.
 
The meet ended with the 400- yard medley relay, where the women’s team of Chapple, Bransford, Collymore and Zielinkski finished in fourth place with a time of 3:56.61. The men’s medley relay team of Josh Davis (Jr., Huron, S.D), Aldabe, Pombo and Nordstrand finished in fifth place with a time of 3:25.10.
 
The Shark Invitational will continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the NSU Aquatic Center. Events scheduled include the 400-yard IM, the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke.


Catawba

Catawba freshman Sebastian Holmberg (Akersberga, SWEDEN) qualified for the NCAA II Nationals with a school and meet record swim in the 100 back at the NSU Shark Invitational on Sunday.  Holmberg posted a time of 48.37 in winning the event.  He backed that up by winning the 100 fly (48.70) in a school and meet record as well.
 
Holmberg also set a mark in the 50 fly (22.40) during his win in the 100 fly.  He helped the 400 medley relay team to a fourth-place finish (1:32.09) which was a NCAA II B cut time.  Finn Furstenwerth (Hamburg, GERMANY) claimed a school record and had a B cut swim in the 400 IM as he finished second with a time of 4:03.91.
 
Jevgenij Gamper (Vilnius, LITHUANIA) finished third in the 100 breast and collected another B cut time of 56.95.  Furstenwerth had a ninth-place finish in the event.  Theo Zatterstrom (Stockholm, SWEDEN) picked up a B cut in the 200 free (1:42.17), finishing 10th.
 
On the women’s side Sunday, the 200 medley relay team of Katia Kruglov (Karmiel, ISRAEL), Janin Kassner (Geisen, GERMANY), Filippa Wallin (Helsingborg, SWEDEN) and Nadine Brockmann (Hamburg, GERMANY) broke the school record with a time of 1:50.38 to finish seventh.  Kruglov set a new record in the 50 back in the leadoff leg with a time of 27.92.
 
Kruglov also swam a B cut time in the 200 free in a time of 1:55.31.  Brockman had a B cut time in the 200 free prelims (1:55.34), finishing 18th in the final.  Kruglov went third in the 100 back (58.59), while Kassner came in ninth in the 100 breast (1:08.10).
 
On Saturday, Kruglov, Brockmann, Kassner and Leah Leah Constan-Tatos (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA) broke the school mark in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.  The team finished seventh with a time of 1:40.19 in the 200 free and eighth in the 400 medley (4:00.63). 
 
Holmberg broke the 100 back mark (49.01) leading off the record-breaking swim for the men in the 400 medley relay (3:21.53).  He joined with Gamper, Magnus Lindgren (Alvsjo, SWEDEN) and Zatterstrom.  Holmberg, Lundgren, Zatterstrom and Toomas Goutt (Saint Witz, FRANCE) finished third in the 200 free relay with a B cut time of 1:23.30.
 
Holmberg and Lundgren had B cut times in the 50 free.  Holmberg was third in a time of 20.95 and Lundgren ninth (21.13).  Gamper finished seventh in the 200 IM (1:55.38).
 
The men broke a school mark in the 800 free relay on Friday’s opening night.  Zatterstrom, Lundgren, Goutt and Holmberg finished third in a B cut time of 6:48.27.  After three days the Catawba men stand fourth among six teams and the women are sixth out of eight schools.  The meet will conclude on Monday.
