Budner, Kline Lead Mid-Major All-American Team

MEREDITH Budner of Towson University and Peter Kline of Cal Poly were named CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Swimmers-of-the-Year.- The pair, along with seven additional men and eighteen women, was also named to the Mid-Major All-American team.

The nineteen women and seven men earned the honor based on their qualification for the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships.- It was the second-fewest number of honorees in the seven years of the program.

Budner was one of three Mid-Major women to finish in the top three among in an individual event.- Budner finished second in both the 500- and 1650-yard freestyles.- Western Kentucky’s Claire Donahue finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke.- Fourteen schools placed swimmers on the first team, led by Towson University’s with four members.

On the men’s side, seven schools placed swimmers on the All-American team, led by the Naval Academy with two.- Kline earned the top honor with the highest average finish for his three individual events.- Columbia’s Adam Powell was the only individual scorer, placing 16th in the 50-yard freestyle

An additional 118 male and 161 female swimmers were awarded Honorable Mention status.- Honorable mention selections are swimmers who were entered with NCAA ‘B’ standards, but not selected for the 2011 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Those 279 swimmers represented 87 teams at sixty-two schools.- Ohio University and Princeton University each had nine women's Honorable Mention selections while Denver's men's team boasted thirteen.

The following conferences have been designated as Mid-Majors: America East, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mountain Pacific, Missouri Valley, Patriot, Sun Belt, Summit, and Western Athletic.- Institutions are also eligible by awarding fewer than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
