Purdue Women Sign Six

Purdue women's swimming and diving head coach John Klinge has announced the Boilermakers' 2012-13 recruiting class, featuring six swimming standouts set to join the program for next season.

Jacie Beagle (Lead, S.D.), Alexa Davis (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Lew Gerbrandt (Butte, Mont.), Lysistrati Halkides (Longwood, Fla.), Elizabeth Lyon (Zionsville, Ind.) and Stephanie Schlobohm (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) have signed National Letters of Intent, committing to attend Purdue and compete for the Boilermakers.

Beagle, a state champion in South Dakota for the Rapid City Racers club coached by Allan McCallum, is a Senior National Qualifier in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 yard backstroke events. As a three-year USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Beagle holds multiple state-records and won the 100 yard and 200 yard back as well as the 100 yard fly at the 2011 Speedo Champions Series. Jacie is the daughter of Jay and Lisa Beagle.

Davis was selected as the Windsor High School Female Athlete of the Year and Santa Rosa Press Democrat Female Swimming Athlete of the Year as a junior. Competing for Windsor High School – where her mother Catherine is her coach – she is a three-year California Interscholastic North Coast Section state qualifier, placing third in the 200 freestyle as a junior. En route to being honored five times as a NISCAA All-American swimmer in the 200 and 500 free, Davis qualified for Senior Nationals in the 500 yard free and Junior Nationals in the 200 yard free, 200 meter free and 400 meter free. As a 12-year-old, Davis won the women’s division of the Alcatraz Invitational Swim, an open-water competition held San Francisco. Allie is the daughter of Brian and Catherine Davis and currently competes for the Neptunes Swim team coached by Dan Greaves.

Gerbrandt is currently a senior at Butte High School and was the 2009-10 Montana Swimming Female Athlete of the Year. Coached by Lynn Shrader, she has won state titles in the 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard IM. She has been honored as the Butte High School Female Swimmer of the Year three times. As a member of the Butte Tarapons Swim Team, Gerbrandt achieved Senior National time standards in the 100 yard fly and 100 meter fly. In addition, Gerbrandt holds standards for Junior Nationals in the 100 yard free, 100 yard fly and 200 yard fly. Lew Yong is the daughter of Gretchen Geller and Butch Gerbrandt.

Halkides swims for Fast Lane Aquatics coached by Alec Rukosuev in the United States. Also competing as a member of the Greek National Team, she is coached by Nikos Gemelos. Halkides ranked 18th in FINA’s 400 SCM IM world rankings in 2009. In her native country of Greece, she set 11 national records and was awarded the key to the city and mayor’s award of Aegina, Greece. Halkides has competed at the World Cup meets in Moscow and Berlin, placing as high as seventh place. Honored as the Florida Girls Swimmer of the Year, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter and 400 meter IM. Lysi is the daughter of Mihalis and Susan Halkides.

Lyon, a team captain and All-American for Zionsville High School, coached by Eric Meyer, is the current school record holder in the 500 yard freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. Lyon has qualified for the Indiana High School State Meet three times in the 200 yard free and 500 yard free. This past season, she was victorious in the 500 yard free at the 2011 Indiana Senior State meet as a part of the Zionsville Swim Club. Lyon is a three-time Indiana state qualifier in the 200 and 500 yard free and has also achieved Junior National standards. Elizabeth is the daughter of Dan and Mary Lyon.

Schlobohm is three-time High School All-American from Aliso Niguel High School, coached by Ryan Cox, and has reached the finals of the California Interscholastic Federation state meet in the 100 yard backstroke (three times), 100 yard freestyle (twice) and 200 yard freestyle (2011). Annually named a Scholar Athlete since 2009, Schlobohm also was selected to the All-Orange County Team each year at Aliso Niguel. As a member of the Aquazot Swim Club, coached by Brian Pajer, Schlobohm qualified for the USA Senior Nationals in the 100 yard and 200 yard back. Stephanie is the daughter of James and DeAnn Schlobohm.
