Grand Valley Rewards Boyce With Top Job

Grand Valley State's Director of Athletics, Tim Selgo, announced Friday that Andy Boyce has been named head coach of the Laker men's and women's swimming and diving programs. Boyce will be just the second head coach in Laker swimming & diving history. He replaces Dewey Newsome who retired after 23 years of coaching.

Boyce served as the interim head coach of the Laker program during the 2007-08 campaign, guiding the Laker men to just their second GLIAC title in the programs history, while the women finished second. Andy was named the 20007-08 GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year. In addition, GVSU advanced a record number of student-athletes to the NCAA Championships where the Laker women placed 16th and the Laker men 21st. Boyce began his career at Grand Valley State in 2004 as an assistant coach and was elevated to associate head coach in 2007 before taking over as interim head coach. Andy made his mark on the program immediately as the 2007-08 sqauds set 20 varsity records and established numerous all-time top-10 marks.

"We are extremely excited to have Andy Boyce take over as the head coach of both our men's and women's swimming and diving programs," said Selgo. "Andy did an outstanding job of leading both programs on an interim basis during the 2007-08 season and proved that he was more than ready to take over as the head coach," added Selgo.

Boyce served as a graduate assistant at Ball State from August of 2002 through May of 2004. Andy was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinals in the pool and was a member of the 200 medley and 400 medley relays that established school records during his time in Muncie. Boyce was a two-time all-state selection at Northview High School where he was named Most Valuable Swimmer three times. Andy was a also a three-time all-area honoree.

"It is truly an honor to be just the second head coach at Grand Valley State," said Boyce. "Dewey (Newsome) did an incredible job of building the Laker swimming and diving programs from scratch and I will do my best to continue to build on the foundation that he started," added Boyce.

The Laker men return all of their letterwinners from the 2007-08 GLIAC title team, while the women lost just two letterwinners to graduation.
