Texas Sweeps Arizona

Texas Men

No. 1 Texas (9-0) led from start-to-finish and put away a convincing 167-128 victory over host No. 15 Arizona Friday evening at U of A’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. 
 
Texas opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay with room to spare, as freshman John Shebat, juniors Will Licon and Will Glass and sophomore Brett Ringgold were victorious in 1 minute, 28.49 seconds. 
 
UT freshman Townley Haas, the only freshman in the country with top-five national marks in three events, led from start-to-finish in the 1000 freestyle and took the win at 9:18.18.  His classmate, Ryan Harty, scored the Horns’ third straight win with his mark of 1:38.28 in the 200 freestyle. 
 
All-America sophomore Brett Ringgold, better known for his proficiency as a sprint freestyler, won the 100 backstroke at 48.94 while Shebat took second at 49.18.  All-America sophomore Austin Temple made it five-for-five for Texas with his winning mark of 56.51 in the 100 breaststroke. 
 
Harty notched his second win of the day and led a one-two Texas finish atop the 200 butterfly at 1:47.94.  Senior John Martens followed in second at 1:48.60.  Senior Mark Anderson and redshirt junior Sean O’Brien took first and second in the one-meter diving event at 383.18 and 376.20, respectively. 
 
Ringgold posted his second win of the day and led a one-two-three Texas finish in the 100 freestyle.  Ringgold was victorious at 44.76 while Haas took second at 45.41 and senior John Murray placed third at 45.75.    
 
Officially, Arizona won the 200 backstroke, though Harty completed the event as an exhibition and posted the event’s top time at 1:47.73.  UT junior Hayden Henry won the 200 breaststroke at 2:04.73. Licon completed the event as an exhibition and posted the event’s top time at 1:59.99. 
 
All-America sophomore Jonathan Roberts captured the 500 freestyle at 4:33.04, and Glass followed with a win in the 100 butterfly at 54.16.  O’Brien won the three-meter diving event with 374.85 points and joined his sister, freshman Meghan O’Brien of the Texas women’s team, as a victorious diver Friday at Arizona. 
 
Texas elected to exhibition the remaining events with the team victory well in hand.  Harty capped a busy Friday evening with the top time in the 200 IM at 1:47.22.  Texas also posted the top time in the meet’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay, where freshman Tate Jackson, senior Matt Ellis, Murray and Ringgold finished in 2:59.20. 
 
Texas and Arizona will compete in an unscored exhibition meet Saturday at 10 a.m. MST (11 a.m. CT). 


Texas Women

No. 4 Texas (8-2) claimed nine of 16 events, with three wins from All-America junior Madisyn Cox, as the Longhorns posted a 154-146 victory over No. 14 Arizona Friday evening at U of A’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. 
 
Arizona opened the meet with a narrow win in the 200-yard medley relay before Texas freshman Joanna Evans posted the Horns’ first win of the day and claimed the 1000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 58.94 seconds. 
 
Texas took the lead for good after its one-two-three showing in the 200 freestyle, where Cox won in 1:48.42.  Evans returned for the 200 just minutes after swimming the 1000 and took second at 1:49.05, and freshman Quinn Carrozza took third at 1:49.36. 
 
All-America junior Tasija Karosas gave the Horns their third straight win and pulled away to victory in the 100 backstroke at 53.93.  Arizona won the 100 breaststroke, but UT’s Olivia Anderson and Jordan Surhoff added second- and third-place points for Texas to limit the Wildcats’ gain. 
 
Texas put additional distance between itself and Arizona by way of its one-two finish in the 200 butterfly, where freshman Remedy Rule took the win at 2:02.09.  Junior Maggie D’Innocenzo took a close second at 2:02.10. 
 
Freshman Meghan O’Brien led a one-two Texas finish atop the final one-meter diving standings.  O’Brien, the younger sister of Texas men’s junior diver Sean O’Brien, claimed the one-meter event with 275.48 points while senior Meghan Houston took second at 267.45.  O’Brien later led the Horns in the three-meter event with her second place total of 294.15 points. 
 
Karosas completed a sweep of the backstroke events and won at the 200-yard distance in 1:56.82 while Carrozza took second at 1:58.73.  Cox notched her second win of the day and pulled away with authority in the final 50 yards to win in 2:12.71. 
 
Evans capped an impressive evening of swimming with her second win and third top-two finish of the day, as she topped Arizona All-American Bonnie Brandon and claimed the 500 freestyle at 4:49.17. 
 
Cox finished off her third win of the evening and handily won the 200 individual medley at 2:01.06. 
 
Texas and Arizona will compete in an unscored exhibition meet Saturday at 10 a.m. MST (11 a.m. CT).  


Arizona

Arizona swimming and diving fell in the final home meet of the season to Texas on Friday evening at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The 14th-ranked women fell just eight points shy of pulling the upset of No. 4 Texas (154-146), while Texas' top-ranked men defeated No. 15 Arizona, 167-113.

The women started off the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Annie Ochitwa, Emma Schoettmer, Mackenzie Rumrill and Taylor Schick took first with a time of 1:40.03. Taylor Garcia, Sara Borendame, Katrina Konopka and Paige Kremer placed third with 1:42.32.

In the 1,000 free, Emma McCarthy finished second, touching in 10:17.43. She was followed by Karli Thuen with 10:22.12.

The Cats went 2-3-4 in the 100 back as Garcia finished second with 54.66. Ochitwa took third (54.80) followed by Konopka (55.24).

Senior, Schoettmer then earned a first-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.82, in a close race against Texas’ Olivia Anderson. She later finished second in the 200 breast (2:14.80) followed by Borendame in third (2:18.54).

In the 200 fly, Mik Ranslem took third with 2:03.83 and Sam Getzen took fourth with 2:05.20.

Senior, Schick then finished first with an impressive performance in the 50 free (22.99). Kremer placed third in the event with 23.41.

Konopka continued the win-streak with a victory in the 100 free, finishing in 50.36. McHugh then took third in the 200 back (1:59.10) followed by Garcia (2:01.35).

Senior, Bonnie Brandon had a second-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.49. Sarah Shimomura placed fourth in the event with 4:59.20.

Arizona gained significant points in the 100 fly, going 1-2-3. Ochitwa took first with a time of 54.16, as the freshman already has an NCAA ‘A’ cut in the event. Rumrill was runner-up (54.66) while Garcia placed third (55.40).  

In the 200 IM, Thuen earned a second-place finish with a time of 2:05.30, and Rumrill followed with 2:05.69.

The meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay, as the Cats needed a 1-2 finish to tie. The team of Konopka, Schick, Brandon and Ochitwa finished first with 3:19.89. However, Arizona’s ‘B’ team placed fourth, giving Texas six points in the event, and the win.

In diving, Sally Hackett took first in the 3-meter with 321.00. Kaitlin Costello placed third (291.75) followed by Karolyn Loftus (275.10). In the 1-meter, Loftus finished third with 267.08, while Hackett came in fourth with 260.25.

For the men, Chatham Dobbs, Andrew Sovero, Chad Idensohn and Renny Richmond were runner-up in the 200 medley relay with 1:29.02. They were followed by Mathias Oh, Gage Crosby, Rasmus Skjaerpe and J.P. Beach (1:31.83).

Tyler Fowler took second in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:23.42. Nick Hogsed placed third (9:26.99) followed by Chris Wieser (9:38.31).

In the 200 free, Parks Jones had a second-place finish, touching in 1:39.23, while Grant Sanders took fourth with 1:41.19. Dobbs then placed third in the 100 back (49.95).

Senior, Sovero finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 56.69, while Crosby came in fourth with 57.45. Justin Wright then took third in the 200 fly (1:48.83) followed by Skjaerpe (1:50.07).

Arizona went 1-2-3 in the 50 free as Richmond came in first with a time of 20.73, followed by Beach with 20.83 and Idensohn with 21.01.

Thane Maudslien added another victory for the men, winning the 200 back with a time of 1:48.54.
Hogsed then finished second in the 500 free with 4:34.10. Fowler took third (4:36.89) and Wieser placed fourth (4:39.43).

In the 100 fly, Skjaerpe had a second-place finish, touching in 49.70, as Oh came in fourth with 50.53.

Richmond, Jones, Dobbs and Idensohn finished second in the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, with a time of 3:01.51.

Senior diver, Rafael Quintero placed third in the 1-meter with a score of 374.40. Quintero later finished second in the 3-meter with 366.53. Senior, Dominic Ricotta took fifth in both events with scores of 308.03 and 318.15, respectively.

Arizona swimming and diving continues senior weekend against Texas on Sat. Jan. 30th at 11:00 a.m. MST with exhibition races.
