Stanford Men Defeat Arizona

No. 5 Stanford won its second conference dual meet in as many days, defeating No. 15 Arizona 173-118 on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center.

“With USC and Cal being the only meets left, there’s not a whole lot of racing left so today was important,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “Racing comes at a premium for us; even within the conference we only have a few dual meets, so it’s nice to see us take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Cardinal (4-0, 3-0 Pac-12) gained a quick advantage over the Wildcats (2-2, 1-2 Pac-12) with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Ryan Dudzinski, Christian Brown, Andrew Liang and Sam Perry (1:28.85) led the way.

Liam Egan (15:23.81) and Danny Thomson (15:39.15) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Sean Duggan (1:38.69) and Jeff Garnier (1:39.21) took the top two places in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by a sweep of the podium in the 100-yard backstroke by Dudzinski (48.82), Ryan Arata (49.53) and Patrick Conaton (49.66).

Matt Anderson (55.84) continued his strong swimming on Friday with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with Christian Brown (56.06) not far behind in second.

Jimmy Yoder (1:46.13) won the 200-yard butterfly with Gray Umbach (1:46.54) finishing second, followed by Perry (20.20) winning the 50-yard freestyle with Spencer DeShon (20.34) in second.

After a short break, Duggan (45.30) and Garnier (45.35) matched their finishes from the 200 free with a one-two swim in the 100-yard freestyle.

Conaton (1:45.54), Arata (1:47.26) and Abrahm DeVine (1:47.96) swept the podium in the 200-yard backstroke, followed by another sweep by Maxwell Williamson (2:02.14), Anderson (2:02.20) and Curtis Ogren (2:04.64) in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Egan (4:29.36) and Thomson (4:29.45) took the top two places in the 500-yard freestyle, an identical finish to the earlier 1,650 free.

Liang (48.66), Connor Black (49.25) and Arata (49.50) claimed the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly.
Williamson (1:48.22), Umbach (1:49.35) and Ogren (1:50.30) kept things going with a podium sweep in the 200-yard individual medley.

Stanford’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Perry, DeShon, Garnier and Duggan (2:58.37) capped the meet with an impressive win.

On the diving side of the competition, Tarek Abdelghany led the way with a third-place finish in the 1-meter (310.13) and a runner-up finish in the 3-meter (349.20). Connor Kuremsky (346.95) added a third place finish in the 3-meter while Bradley Christensen (325.58) was runner-up in the 1-meter.

“Today was better than yesterday and I feel like we are on track to peak in the championship season,” said diving coach Patrick Jeffrey. “Tarek in particular had a great day and used some new dives, and Connor was as solid as usual.”

The Cardinal returns to action Feb. 6, travelling to Los Angeles to face USC.
