Iowa Men
The University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team won 10 events en route to a 174.5-125.5 Big Ten Conference road victory at Northwestern on Saturday at the Norris Aquatics Center.
"It was great to get a Big Ten win on the road and after such a long layoff from meets." said head coach Marc Long "We're anxious to continue our preparation for our Championship season and our Notre Dame meet next weekend."
The Hawkeyes opened the meet with a victory in the 200-medley relay with the quartet of freshman Kenneth Mende, senior Roman Trussov, sophomore Jerzy Twarowski, and freshman Jack Smith swimming to a winning time of 1:29.65.
Individually, Mende claimed two wins to go along with a runner-up finish. The Germany native swam to a victory in the 100 back in 48.89 and 200-back in 1:48.47. He also finished second in the 200 IM in 1:53.39.
Senior Andrew Parker also tallied a top-three finish in the 200 back, finishing with a time of 1:50.08.
Iowa also got a pair of first place finishes from Twarowski in the butterfly and Trussov in the breaststroke events.
Twarowski posted a victory in the 100 fly in 49.05 seconds and 200 fly in 1:49.05. Trussov won the 100 breast in 55.69 and 200 breast in 2:02.65.
The Hawkeyes went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast. Senior Tyler Nichols was runner-up to Trussov, touching in 57.00 seconds, while senior Mike Nelson was third in 57.07.
Iowa’s sprinters performed well in freestyle events. Smith swam to a victory in the 100 free in 45.18 seconds, while finishing as runner-up in the 50 free (20.66). Kyle Gannon was runner-up in 200 free with a time of 1:41.13.
Sophomore Chris Dawson paced the Hawkeyes in the distance events; swimming to a pair of runner-up finishes. He finished with a time of 9:36.46 in the 1,000 free and 4:39.05 in the 500.
Iowa closed out the dual victory with a victory in the 400-free relay. Trussov, freshman Matt Kamin, junior Jackson Halsmer, and Smith touched with a time of 3:01.88.
In the diving well, the Hawkeyes had four of the top five scores off the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Will Brenner won the competition with a score of 356.33, followed by Addison Borschult (320.25) and Brandis Heffner (310.73).
Boschult led Iowa off the 3-meter, finishing as the runner-up with a score of 341.78. Brenner placed third at 319.35.
The Hawkeyes return to action Jan. 29-30, heading to South Bend, Indiana, for the Shamrock Invitational.
Iowa Women
The University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team won dropped a 190.5-109.5 Big Ten Conference dual at Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center. The Hawkeyes won four events in the dual.
"We had some solid individual performances, but overall it's a disappointing loss." said head coach Marc Long. "We need to stay focused and work hard towards the Championship Season."
Iowa opened the day with a victory in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of senior Allie Orvis, junior Emma Sougstad, freshman Kelly McNamara, and junior Taylor Flummerfelt finished with a time of 1:42.97.
Sougstad swam to two individual first-place finishes, taking first in both breastroke competitions. She won the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.44 and was victorious in the 200 breast in 2:16.89. Sophomore Shea Hoyt swam to a third place showing in the 100 breast, touching in at 1:05.38.
Orvis backed her way into a runner-up finish in the 100 back in 56.35 seconds, while sophomore Meghan Lavelle took third in the 200-back, backing into a time of 2:03.36.
Freshman Abbey Schneider took third in the distance free, posting a time of 10:18.16 in the 1,000.
Junior sprinter Serena Wanasek was the runner-up in the 200 free, finishing in 1:52.09, while senior Olivia Kabacinski followed up with a third place showing in 1:52.21.
Kabacinski also was the runner-up in the 50 free, posting a time of 23.64. Sophomore Nikol Lagodzinska swam to a third place finish in the 100 free, sprinting to a time of 52.15.
In the butterfly events, McNamara swam to a victory in the 100 fly in 56.02 seconds, while sophomore Tereysa Lehnertz flew to a runner-up showing in the 200 fly in 2:03.93.
The Hawkeyes closed out the day in the pool with a second place finish in the 400-free relay. The crew of Kabacinski, Sougstad, Lagodzinska, and Flummerfelt touched in at 3:25.84.
In the diving well, sophomore Morgan Rafferty was the runner-up off the 3-meter, posting a score of 281.18.
