Purdue

Kaersten Meitz’s sweep of the women’s distance freestyle events and three event victories from the divers highlighted what was an otherwise tough day for the Purdue swimming and diving teams in the rivalry dual meet at Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 21 Purdue women (5-2, 3-2 B1G) won five of the 16 events in a 185.5-114.5 loss to the 16th-ranked Hoosiers. The Purdue men (4-3, 2-2 B1G) lost their side of the co-ed dual 187-107 to No. 9 Indiana.

Along with Meitz, Marat Amaltdinov (200 breast), Sydney Couch (platform diving), Allie Davis (100 free), Mary Beth Dunnichay (1-meter diving) and Max Showalter (platform diving) also won an individual event for the Boilermakers. Filip Bujoczek, Danny Conway and Emily Fogle were Purdue’s top finishers in multiple events.

Meitz swept the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. Her winning time of 9:44.58 in the 1,000 improved on her second-fastest mark in program history and would rank fifth nationally via the data compiled by CollegeSwimming.com entering the weekend. The sophomore later won the 500 free with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:46.62.

Dunnichay was first in 1-meter diving with a Purdue season-best score of 322.43. Couch and Showalter were both victorious from the platforms for the second time this season. Joe Cifelli took an eight-point into the final round of 1-meter diving, but IU’s Josh Arndt posted the best score of the competition (72.00) on his final dive to surge in front.

After being out touched by one tenth of a second by IU standout Kennedy Goss in a fast 200 free in which both women posted NCAA B Cuts, Davis came back to win the 100 free later in the meet. It was her team-leading 15th individual event victory of the season. She posted times of 50.56 and 1:46.52.

Amaltdinov accomplished a similar feat in the men’s breaststroke events. He finished 1.26 seconds behind IU standout Tanner Kurz in the 100, but bested Kurz by 2.69 seconds in the 200 later in the meet. Amaltdinov posted times of 55.53 and 1:59.68, the latter being an NCAA B Cut.

The Purdue men closed the meet with a team season-best time of 3:01.35 in the 400 free relay, recorded by the quartet of Austin Flager, Bujoczek, Stephen Seliskar and Josh Ehrman.

The Boilermakers posted strong showings in both 100 butterfly races. Meagan Lim, Breanna Robinson and Emmy Rawson finished 2-3-4 behind the event winner for IU. Flager, Seliskar and Conway did likewise for the men.

Both Purdue teams close out their dual meet schedules next weekend when they take on Minnesota and Northwestern at the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals, hosted by NU in Evanston this year.
