Dartmouth Invite - Final Day

UMass Men

A first-place finish and a pool record in the 1,650 freestyle by Alessandro Bomprezzi highlighted the UMass men's swimming and diving team's performance on the final day of the Dartmouth Invitational held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

The Minutemen finished third overall in the meet with 852 points. Boston College won the two-day meet with 1,272 points.

All told, UMass showed off its team depth in a variety of events with 36 swimmers placing among the top 10 positions.

Bomprezzi was the lone Minuteman to win an event on the final day of competition taking the 1,650 free in 15 minutes, 52.06 seconds. That performance broke UMass alum Chris Inglis' previous UVAC pool record of 15:56.02 which was set on Jan. 28, 2012.

The morning session began with UMass placing three swimmers among the top-10 in both the 400 individual medley and the 100 fly. James Allen paced the Minutemen in the 400 IM placing third in 4:10.76, while Ben Sloan took fourth in the 100 fly (52.17).

Owen Wright took fourth in the 200 free (1:43.19) as one of four Minutemen with times in the top 10. Eric Pauls (7th), Kyle Vieira (8th) and James Allen (t-9th) combined with Wright to earn UMass a total of 46 points in the event.

Wright added a third place finish in the 100 breast (58.95), while Alex D'Anna placed sixth. 

The morning session finished with another quartet of Minutemen posting top-10 times in the 100 backstroke. Kelley Gray led the group with a fourth-place finish (51.76) followed by Oliver Wyeth (5th), Kyle Stefanides (7th) and Ian Wilson (9th).

On the boards, Robert Barry took third on the one-meter dive, while Trent Kindvall placed third on the three-meter dive. Barry also placed fifth in the three-meter dive, while Kindvall was fifth in the one-meter event.

The best overall event for UMass was the 1,650 free as Bomprezzi was followed by Pauls (5th), Vieira (6th), Joe Woodman (7th) and Austen Sholudko (9th).

Rounding out the top performances from the afternoon session was a second-place finish in the 100 free for Wright, a third-place finish in the 200 fly for Sloan, and a third-place finish in the 200 breast by D'Anna.


UMass Women

Emma Roush swept the one-meter and three-meter diving events and Meriza Werenski won the 400 individual medley in UMass' fourth-place finish in the final day of the Dartmouth Invitational held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center on Saturday.

The Minutewomen tallied 643 overall points, while host Dartmouth won the event with 1,141 points. Of UMass' total team points, 108 were secured by the divers who posted 1-2-3 finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter events.

Roush took first in the one-meter dive with a personal-best score of 293.85 points which is the second-best mark in program history. She followed that with a first-place finish on the three-meter board with a score of 275.35 points.

Werenski won the 400 IM in 4 minutes, 34.26 seconds as the Minutewomen's only other event winner on the day. She also led UMass in the 200 breaststroke with a seventh-place finish (2:32.98).

In addition to Roush's performance on the diving boards, Katie Polk posted the seventh-best score in program history on the one-meter board placing second with a total of 278.75 points. She was followed by Julia Jagannath who placed third with 258.40 points. Jagannath and Polk flip-flopped finishes on the three-meter board going second and third, respectively.

In addition to Werenski's performance in the 400 IM to start the morning session, Jenna Diamond added a sixth place finish in the event. UMass then placed three swimmers in the top 10 of the 100 fly with Cassie Sosnovich leading the way with the third fastest time of the day (58.56 seconds). Jocelyn Yuen and Rachel Grant placed sixth and seventh, respectively. The morning session was closed out with Sydney Connor taking sixth in the 100 breaststroke and Rebecca Quirie and Dash Egkorova going eighth and 10th in the 100 back. 

In the afternoon session, Steph Campo and Kate Orr placed just two second apart from each other in the 1,650 freestyle with the fifth and sixth fastest times of the meet. Quirie added a ninth-place finish in the 200 back, while Yuen added a fourth-place finish in the 200 fly. Ansley Baker rounded out the top-10 performers with a 10th-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.


Northeastern

The Northeastern women's swimming and diving team had one of its best team outings of the season, placing second overall (1,030 points) and picked up two dual-meet victories at the Dartmouth Invitational, Jan. 22-23.
 
"This weekend's meet was our best performance of the season. I couldn't be prouder of our team," said head coachRoy Coates.

Host Dartmouth won with 1,141 points. The Huskies took home dual-meet victories against Massachusetts, 238-115, and Boston College, 278.50-74.50. NU's lone loss was to the Big Green by five points, 179-174.
 
The Huskies added seven first-place finishes, another meet record and one pool record under their belt, totaling nine wins, three meet records and two pool records at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center on the weekend.
 
NU opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay with Christine Leong, Delaney Lanker, Taylor Ellis and Rachel Green tagging the wall in 1:46.51 – a new meet record, which was previously 1:47.29.

Touchette-McGowan wen on to gold in the 100 fly with a new pool record of 56.16 – the previous being 56.36.

Ellis' top performance in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.42) ousted the previous meet record of 1:04.63.
 
Lanker won the 200 fly in 2:05.01.

Leong swept the backstroke events with 57.78 (100 back) and 2:04.72 (200 back) on the clock.

Touchette-McGowan, Rachel Green, Sophie Tallier and Rachel Geiger placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with 3:36.34.
 
Northeastern brings the competition home on Saturday, Jan. 30 for senior day against LIU Brooklyn. The meet is set for 2 p.m.
