Bams Makes Immediate Impact as Bama Sweeps GT

Mid-season addition Laurent Bams had a big day for Alabama as the Tide men beat Georgia Tech 199-99.   The Tide women won by 191-106.  Bams is the Dutch Junior National record-holder in the 50 and 100 backstroke.  In addition to being the last meet of the regular season and senior day, the competition was also Alabama's Power of Pink meet to help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

“We faced a great program in Alabama today,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart said. “It was a very fun meet for our team, and we saw a lot of good things from our athletes. We are all very excited about coming back to Atlanta for our Senior Day and Family Weekend celebrations, and we look forward to seeing our fans in the stands next Saturday when we face Emory.”

Tech started things out on a high note, as the team of Maddie Paschal, Florina Ilie, Laura Branton and Iris Wang won the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.19.

Overall, the Tide won 21 of 36 events, including sweeps in the men's 200 freestyle, both the men's and women's 100 backstroke, women's 100 and 200 breaststroke, women's 200 butterfly and men's 500 freestyle races.

The Tide men started the meet with a win in the men's 200 medley relay. Juniors Connor Oslin, Pavel Romanov, Kristian Gkolomeev and Alex Gray combined for a 1:27.76 to secure their victory. Oslin later swam a 1:46.06 to win the men's 200 backstroke while Romanov won the men's 100 breaststroke, swimming a 54.71.

Sophomore Mia Nonnenberg brought home the Tide's first individual victory of the day in the women's 1,000 freestyle with a 9:58.51. Nonnenberg later swam a 4:18.99 to win the women's 400 individual medley.

Senior Emma Saunders took top honors in the women's 200 freestyle with a 1:50.06 and the 200 backstroke with a 2:00.70.

The Tide men had their first one-two-three sweep of the day in the 200 freestyle with sophomore Matthew Adams earning the win with a 1:39.17, followed by freshman Christian Arseneau, 1:39.69, and Gray, 1:39.77.

The Tide men and women swept the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Temarie Tomley won the women's race, clocking in at 56.35 while sophomore Luke Kaliszak won the men's event with a 47.71. Oslin and sophomore Christopher Reid followed Kaliszak to secure second and third for the Tide with a 47.76 and 48.96, respectively.
