Purdue Beats Eastern Michigan on Senior Day

Five Boilermakers each won a pair of individual events, highlighting the senior salute meet for the Purdue swimming and diving teams Friday evening at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The Purdue men topped Eastern Michigan 128-109 to improve to 4-2 in dual meets this season. The Gold Team was a 129.5-108.5 winner in the women’s intrasquad.

Joe Cifelli, Allie Davis, Mary Beth Dunnichay, Emily Fogle and Meagan Lim each won two individual events. Dunnichay swept the women’s diving events with a pair of team season-best scores, including a career-best mark of 371.63 of 3-meter that moved her into sixth place in program history.

Led by Cifelli’s sweep of the diving events, the Purdue men won 11 of the 13 events.

Dunnichay and Lim accounted for four of the Gold Team’s seven victories. Lim won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly back-to-back with only a planned 20-minute meet break in the middle. She also contributed to her team’s victory in the 200 medley relay.

The Purdue men had the top four finishers in the 50 freestyle and 400 IM. Adam Johnston won the 50 free and later anchored the Boilermakers’ 200 free relay team to victory. Adam Noens touched first among the top four finishers from Purdue in the 400 IM.

Davis posted another NCAA provisional-qualifying time while winning the 200 free, later won the 500 free and capped the meet by staking her victorious 400 free relay team to an early lead. Fogle was the winner of the 100 breaststroke as expected, but also took the 50 free. She also posted an impressive 50-yard breaststroke split of 26.73 in the 200 medley relay. Both seniors raced as part of the Black Team on Friday.

The men’s half of the meet featured three exciting tight finishes in the longer events. The 200 and 1000 free as well as the 200 backstroke were all decided by less than three quarters of a second. Filip Bujoczek won the 200 free, Josh Brooks the 1000 and Alex Toetz took the 200 back.

Marat Amaltdinov (200 breast) and Bujoczek also won an event and contributed to a relay winner. Danny Conway won the 200 fly. Austin Flager and Stephen Seliskar swam on both relays winners.

Kaersten Meitz won the 1000 free and anchored the 400 free relay team to victory for the Black Team. Grace Hernandez accomplished a similar feat in the 100 free and 200 medley relay for the Gold Team. Hannah Manger was victorious in the 100 back for the Gold Team.

The Boilermakers return to action Saturday, Jan. 23 for a co-ed dual meet at rival Indiana. Action begins at 11 a.m.
