Messiah Women Open with Middle Atlantic Lead; Albright, Widener Men Tied For First

The first day of the 2016 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships were completed on Thursday at the Graham Aquatic Center.

Through two events, Messiah is on top of the women’s standings with 80 points. Misericordia is in second with 68 points. Arcadia and Widener are tied for third with 62 points. Messiah and Misericordia took first and second in both opening relays. Arcadia took third in the 200-yard medley relay, while Widener took third in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Hood rounds out the top-five with 54 points.

Albright and Widener are tied atop of the men’s standings with 72 points through the first two events. Arcadia is in third with 58 points. Lycoming, Messiah and Misericordia are all tied for fourth with 56 points. Albright won the 200-yard medley relay, while Widener took the 800-yard freestyle relay.

 
200-YARD MEDLEY RELAY
Women
Messiah’s Joelle Williamson, Gaby Brubaker, Cassie Cotton and Tara Freeman took gold with a time of 1:48.57. Their time was .22 seconds off of the pool record. Misericordia took second in a time of 1:50.84, and Arcadia claimed third with a time of 1:51.23.
 
Men
Albright’s Drew Leahy, Tyler Chamberlin, Jay DesChamps and Matthew Runtas claimed gold with a time of 1:35.82. Their time was less than a second off the pool record. Lycoming finished in second with a time of 1:36.95, and Widener took third with a time of 1:37.05
 
 
800-YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
Women
Messiah’s Cotton, Freeman, Emily Reale and Katie Wingert claimed the Falcons’ second gold medal of the evening with a new MAC Championship finals best time of 7:45.99. The mark is also a new school record. Misericordia finished in second with a time of 7:54.47, and Widener took third with a time of 7:55.89.
 
Men
Widener’s Ian Gaynor, Tom Platt, Sam Smith and Jeffrey Hicks won gold with a time of 6:59.20. Their time was four second slower than the time the Pride swam last year to win gold (6:55.20). Arcadia finished second in a time of 7:01.88, and Albright finished third in a time of 7:05.00.
