Washington State Falls to Stanford

Washington State swimming opened the season by claiming four wins in a 142-119 defeat to Stanford University at Gibb Pool Friday.
 
The Cougars received a pair of wins from freshman Jasmine Margetts in the 100 backstroke and the 400 IM, a win from senior Presley Wetterstrom in the 200 breastroke and closed the day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay over the Cardinal, the NCAA runner-up last season. Washington State also produced four school top-10 marks. Margetts led all swimmers with 22 points on the day and Wetterstrom tallied the fourth-most points, 14.
 
Three Cougars placed in the top four in the 1000 free before Margetts picked up WSU’s first win of the day, claiming the 100 backstroke in 56.50 while freshman Ciera Kelly finished second at 58.93.
 
In the 100 breastroke, Wetterstom picked up four points for the Cougars after touching the wall second at 1:05.52  with senior Frederikke Hall just behind at 1:05.54 for third. In the 200 butterfly, junior Elise Locke posted a second-place finish at 2:02.31, the fifth-best mark in WSU history.
 
The 50 freestyle saw two more Cougars post top-3 marks as sophomore Hannah Bruggman touched second (23.53) and Haley Rose Love third at 23.91. Bruggman later added another second place finish in the 100 freestyle at 52.25.
 
Margetts picked up for more points for Washington State with a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke, posting the ninth-best mark in school history at 2:01.37. In the 200 breastroke, Wetterstrom cruised to victory, touching the wall in a 2:17.69, the seventh-fastest time in WSU history. Hall produced another four points for the Cougars with a second-place finish behind Wetterstrom.
 
WSU tallied a couple points in the 100 butterfly as sophomore Anna Brolin (56.52) and junior Haley Rose Love (56.59) posted second and third place marks, respectively. Margetts capped her first collegiate meet by claiming the 400 IM, holding off a later push from a Stanford swimmer to touch the wall in 4:23.10, the eighth-best time in school history.
 
The Cougars closed the day in impressive fashion, overtaking Stanford down the stretch of the 400 freestyle relay to claim the win at 3:28.72.
 
Washington State returns to the pool in two weeks, hosting defending national champion Univeristy of California Friday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. in Gibb Pool.
