Northeastern's McCann Receives Inaugural Swim Across America Award

When the Northeastern swimming and diving team headed out to the Swim Across America (SAA) Rhode Island Open Water Swim last weekend, the team felt pretty accomplished for raising more than $9,900 for cancer research and treatment at Providence's Women & Infants Hospital.

But the Huskies had something – more specifically, someone – to feel even more proud of.

Associate head coach Katie McCann received the inaugural Betsy Bilodeau Award from SAA, an honor given to an individual that exemplifies the same kindred energy, compassion and commitment to the fight against cancer as Ms. Bilodeau had.

Betsy Bilodeau was an admired member of the SAA Women & Infants community, who lost her battle with cancer this past June. She was a 16-year employee of Women & Infants and is remembered as a vibrant and spirited individual to all that knew her.

Over the past year, McCann has been fighting her own battle against cancer and is happy to say she's doing great.

"The Northeastern community, Swim Across America and my girls have been incredibly supportive this past year," said McCann. "I am so thankful to all who helped me get through this battle and I am so proud to be a Husky."

Senior Megan Rutter said, "I don't know anybody more deserving of being honored in front of hundreds of people than Katie. She was an amazing swimmer and is so passionate about the sport. [She] has inspired us all to fight with everything we have every day."

McCann joined the Red and Black in 2010, beginning as an assistant coach and was later promoted to associate. She graduated from the University of Florida in 2006 as a well-decorated student-athlete, finishing her collegiate career with All-SEC team honors two years in a row, as well as All-American honors. McCann also posted two top-20 finishes at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.

"Katie is a true professional and caring coach, [who] never let her treatment or how she felt physically get in the way of doing an amazing job," said head coach Roy Coates.

The swim was the first team outing of the season for Northeastern. The Huskies were one of the top-10 teams to contribute to an overall goal of $150,000 for the cause.

"I am so proud of our team! We came together, set a challenging goal and raised $10,000 for a great cause. This was the perfect start to our season," said Coates.

Swim Across America Inc. (SAA) is an organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through athleticism, community outreach and direct service at swimming-related events.
