Assumption Sweeps Pace, Purchase

The Assumption College swimming team claimed two victories in a tri-match on Saturday over Pace University and Purchase College. The Hounds took 11 first-place victories on the day.

The Hounds kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The squad, consisting of senior Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony), junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland), sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) and sophomore Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep), touched the wall in a time of 1:53.92 for the win.

In addition to her first-place relay finish, Weber claimed three first-place individual wins including in the 100 backstroke (1:00.50), the 100 butterfly (1:00.64) and the 200 IM (2:14.99).

Weber was followed in the 200 IM by sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School), who clocked a time of 2:16.53.

Morgan led four Hounds to a perfect sweep in the 200 backstroke, claiming all four of the top spots. She touched in 2:12.32 and was followed by Barr (2:15.52), sophomore Aerin Toskas (Douglaston, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) in 2:19.95 and senior Caroline Flynn (North Attleboro, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) in 2:20.64.

Waite was one of two Hounds to claim two individual victories on the day. She topped the 200 freestyle field (1:58.01) as well as the 100 free field (55.27).

Waite was followed immediately in the 100 free by freshman Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon) (55.98).

Three time NE-10 Rookie of the Week Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) also notched two victories. She touched first in the 1,000 free (10:37.82) and in the 500 free with her time of 5:15.01.

Gagnon also claimed a victory for the Hounds, finishing first with her time of 1:09.36 in the 100 breaststroke.

Assumption closed the meet just as it started, earning a win in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Nicholls, Quirk, freshman Caroline Cole (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury) and sophomore Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) clocked a time of 3:45.93.

Quirk's victory in the 1,000 freestyle narrowly missed the Assumption record. The freshman finished in 10:37.82, just shy of the current record of 10:37.07 set in February 2012.

Freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) finished third in the 100 butterfly with her season-best time of 1:02.31.

The Hounds are set to return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7. at WPI for the Wesleyan Invitational. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
