Senior Morten Klarskov, junior Michael Domagala, sophomore Pawel Furtek and freshmen Kyle Grissom, Allie Wooden, Destiny Nelson and Riley Scott all won two races apiece as the USC men’s swimming and diving team defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 192-95, and the women’s team defeated Oregon State, 164-90, on Friday (Oct. 23) at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The Trojan men improve to 4-0 while the women move to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-12.
USC’s women’s team opened the racing as sophomore Hannah Weiss, freshmen Scott and Lily Dubroff and junior Anika Apostalon won the 200y medley relay in 1:42.00. The men’s squad of senior Jeff Swanston, Klarskov, Domagala and Kyle Grissom win in 1:30.86.
Oregon State’s Sammy Harrison won the first individual race, claiming the 1000y free in 10:05.96 with Trojan freshman Elizabeth Stinson second (10:08.47). Furtek ran away with the men’s race, winning in 9:08.60 with more than a 30-second margin over second.
Wooden (1:49.17) out-touched junior teammate Chelsea Chenault (1:49.54) to win the 200y free. Junior Reed Malone captured the men’s race in 1:38.85 with freshman Cash DeLoache second (1:44.26).
Weiss claimed the 100y back in 54.17, 0.03 off her NCAA ‘B’ last week, with freshman Hanni Leach taking second (55.81) in her first race in the event this year. Sophomore Jon Knox won the men’s 100y back in 50.37 with Swanston second (50.71).
Scott (1:03.08), fellow freshman Kirsten Vose (1:03.78) and junior Kelsey Kafka (1:04.01) went 1-2-3 in the women’s breast. The men’s team turned in a sweep as well with Klarskov (55.65), junior Steven Stumph (57.40) and sophomore Jonah Hu (57.78).
Freshmen Madison Wright (2:01.01) and Sydney Lofquist (2:07.02) turned in a 1-2 finish in the 200y fly while Domagala (1:48.29) and senior Ted Singley (1:50.51) did the same in the men’s race.
Apostalon won the women’s 50y free in 23.34, winning with more than a second cushion, and Grissom raced to the men’s win in 20.85.
Senior Collin Pollard won the men’s 1-meter (365.18) while senior Deon Reid finished first on 3-meter (387.23), edging Pollard’s 385.65.
Following the diving break, Wooden won her second race of the day, taking the 100y free from lane 2 in 50.83, leading a sweep as juniors Evan Swenson (51.60) and Chenault (51.74) took second and third, respectively.
Freshmen Wooden (50.83) and Grissom (45.93) each led 1-2-3 sweeps in the 100y free, both posting their second wins of the meet.
Freshman Destiny Nelson won the women’s 200y back in 1:59.88 with Leach second in 2:01.82. Klarskov earned his second win with a 1:49.35 in the men’s race with Knox closing in second (1:50.51).
Scott repeated as a winner by taking the 200y breast in 2:15.00 (0.17 off her NCAA B cut) with junior Brianna Weinstein second in 2:20.33. Hu claimed the 200y breast (2:04.31) with Stumph second (2:07.05).
Oregon State’s Harrison won the 500y free (4:56.46) for her second win with USC’s Nikki Chang second (5:01.68). Furtek touched first in the men’s race in 4:33.06 with Singley at 4:35.63.
Dubroff took the women’s 100y fly in 56.29, just ahead of Wright’s 56.79 with senior Lucy Worrall third (57.27). Domagala doubled up with a win in the men’s race in 48.56. Senior Maclin Davis was second (49.96).
Nelson became the fourth Trojan freshman to win two races, capturing the 200y IM in 2:02.95. Freshman Walker Bell won the men’s 400y IM in 4:07.04.
Swenson, Chenault, Wooden and Apostalon won the women’s 200y free relay in 1:33.19 while Domagala, Malone, Klarskov and David Morgan Jr. won the men’s race in 1:23.36.
