Indiana Repeats Results from Friday Against Florida, Texas

The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished up a great meet against two top-10 teams on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
 
The Indiana women defeated Florida for the second-straight day, 142-120, but fell to Texas, 141-115. On the men’s side, the Hoosiers lost to the defending NCAA champion Texas Longhorns, 154-108, and lost to Florida, 140-122.
 
On the day, the Indiana men’s and women’s swimmers combined to win seven events and record 11 NCAA B cut qualifying times.
 
The Hoosiers started Saturday’s meet off just like they did on Friday, by winning the day’s first event.
 
In the 200 medley relay, the women’s team of Marie Chamberlain, Lilly King, Gia Dalesandro and Gabriela Rajic won the event with a time of 1:41.65 – beating the top team from Texas by nearly a second. For the men, the team of Bob Glover, Tanner Kurz, Oliver Patrouch and Ali Khalafalla were the top Hoosier finishers, placing third with a mark of 1:29.48.
 
Haley Lips continued her strong start to the season, placing third overall in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:00.93. For the men, Jackson Miller also placed third for the Hoosiers, touching the wall in a time of 9:10.12.
 
In the 200 freestyle, Blake Pieroni continued his great weekend, winning the event with a time of 1:36.06 – a NCAA B qualifying time. For the women, Kennedy Goss placed fourth with a mark of 1:49.57.
 
Marie Chamberlain continued the great swimming for the Hoosiers in the 100 backstroke, winning in a NCAA B cut time of 55.01. For the men, Bob Glover placed third (49.31), while Ryan Gordon finished fourth (49.77).
 
The IU women had a great showing in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 2-3 with a pair of NCAA B cuts. Lilly King touched second in 1:01.64, while Miranda Tucker was right behind her in a time of 1:02.29.
 
The IU men made is a clean 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breast, with Tanner Kurz winning the event with a NCAA B cut time of 54.33. Levi Brock placed second in 56.57, while Cody Taylor touched third in a time of 57.21.
 
In the 200 butterfly, IU’s Gia Dalesandro won the event in a NCAA B cut time of 1:58.86. For the men, Max Irwin was the top Hoosier finisher, placing fifth with a time of 1:49.35.
 
In the 50 freestyle, Ali Khalafalla placed second overall with a NCAA B cut time of 20.18, while teammate Anze Tavcar finished fourth in 20.64. For the women, Gabriela Rajic placed fourth in a time of 23.71.
 
Blake Pieroni earned his second individual win of the day in the 100 freestyle, winning in a time of 43.69 – a NCAA B cut. On the women’s side, Gabriela Rajic placed fifth (41.49) and Kaitlin Kitchens finished sixth (51.63).
 
In the 200 backstroke, the Indiana men went 3-5-6, as Ryan Gordon leads the way with a time of 1:48.00. Joseph Lane clocked in at 1:48.70 and Bob Glover finished in 1:48.74. For the women, Shelly Drozda placed fifth in a time of 2:00.41.
 
Miranda Tucker and Lilly King finished 2-3 for the Hoosiers in the 200 breaststroke, with both earning NCAA B cuts. Tucker clocked in at 2:12.90, while King placed third in a time of 2:13.62. For the men, Tanner Kurz placed second with a time of 2:00.07, while Cody Taylor finished fourth in 2:08.61.
 
In the 500 freestyle, the Hoosier women placed 2-3, with Haley Lips timing in at 4:50.08 and Kennedy Goss in 4:55.29. For the men, Jackson Miller places second overall with a time of 4:26.37.
 
Gia Dalesandro notched her second individual win of the day in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a NCAA B cut winning time of 54.43. For the men, Blake Pieroni placed sixth overall with a time of 49.30.
 
In the 400 individual medley, Sam Lisy led the way for the Hoosier women, placing third overall with a time of 4:21.09. For the men, Brandon Colonis placed seventh with a time of 4:02.69.
 
In the final event of the double-dual meet, the team of Grace Vertigans, Delaney Barnard, Kennedy Goss and Miranda Tucker placed second in a time of 3:28.04 for the Hoosiers. On the men’s side, the team of Sam Lorentz, Tanner Kurz, Jackson Miller and Max Irwin placed third with a time of 3:02.12.
 
The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Friday, October 30 when the team hosts Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina to Bloomington. 

 

Florida

The University of Florida men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up Day Two competition at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Today’s competition was swum in a short course format.

The Gators surrendered a pair of losses to Texas and Indiana on both ends.

Jack Blyzinskyj posted UF’s first win during Saturday’s competition, coming in the 100 backstroke (47.04). Caeleb Dressel added to the wins column with a first-place finish in the 50 free -- touching out with a time 19.36.  Later in the 100 free, Dressel gathered a runner-up finish in the 100 free, coming in at the 43.70 mark.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Blyzinskyj, Dressel, Mark Szaranek, and Corey Main posted a second-place finish, coming in with a time of 1:29.00. Szaranek added on in the 400 IM -- finishing second overall with a time of 3:50.60. 

Arther Frayler, Pawel Werner, and Main also posted a runner-up finishes throughout the day. Frayler finished second in the 1,000 free (9:07.21), Werner in the 200 freestyle (1:37.08), and Main in the 200 backstroke (1:44.79).

On the women’s side, Natalie Hinds gathered UF’s first win of the day, touching out with a first-place time of 22.90 in the 50 freestyle. In the ensuing race, Hinds posted her second win on the day in the 100 freestyle (49.32).

Jessica Thielmann, Ashlee Linn, and Hannah Burns each gathered runner-up finishes. Thielmann came in second in the 1,000 free (9:55.24), Linn in the 200 free (1:48.49) the 100 back (55.31), and the 200 back (1:57.13), and Burns in the 400 IM (4:18.97).

The Gator women ended on a strong note, gathering the top finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Linn, Mollie Pulte, Georgia-Mae Hohmann, and Hinds teamed up on 3:23.35 first-place finish.

The Orange and Blue will return to action on Friday, October 30, when they host SEC-rival Georgia inside the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida.
