Denver Women Top Omaha

The University of Denver women’s swimming and diving team hosted the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday and defeated the Mavericks by a total score of 101 to 45.

“It was great to host a conference opponent and race through a pentathlon order of events with them, almost ‘training style,’” head coach Brian Schrader said after the meet.  “I liked the way our girls responded to that challenge (lots of races on short rest) and the idea of racing hard after our dual meet win last night.”

The DU Women registered wins in seven out of 10 events on Saturday, including the 200 yard medley relay (1:44.52), made up of Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany), Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.), Morgan McCormick )Golden, Colo.) and Zoe Huddleston (Rothschild, Wisc.).

Freshmen Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas) and Bailey Andison (Smith Falls, Ontario) picked up their first wins with the program as Tullier placed first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.14) and Andison won the 100 yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:04.86.

Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) finished first in the 100 yard butterfly (57.74), while sophomore Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo) won the 100 yard backstroke (56.55). Roas competed in the 200 yard IM and her time of 2:08.43 was good enough for a first place finish.

“I thought we had great efforts all around, and we saw some good improvements out of our first year athletes,” Schrader added. “It was nice to see Bailey Andison and Annelyse Tullier pick up their first wins.  Avery Niemann went a lifetime best time, which was great to watch.  Morgan Mullenix was back in our lineup and racing hard.  Solid efforts from our upperclassmen—Huddleston, Roas, MCormick, Maddie Myers, Morgan Wice, Clara Jenck, Nicole Cassou, Ashley Taylor, Madeline Eyolfson—we had a good team effort and they helped lead the way.”

Junior Larissa Grammer (Olathe, Colo.) led the way for the divers, finishing first in the three meter event with nine points and a finals score of 228.40, as well as a strong second place finish in the one meter diving event with four points and a finals score of 220.35.

“On the diving side of things…Larissa Grammer picked up a nice win and keeps getting better with every opportunity,” Schrader said.

The team will travel to Lawrence, Kan. next weekend to take on KU and MSU on Friday, Oct. 23rd and Saturday, Oct. 24th.
