Illinois State Falls to Truman State

The Illinois State swimming team had its first dual meet of the season Friday afternoon at Truman State. After a tough battle, the Redbirds fell to the Bulldogs, 127-78.

Illinois State head swimming coach Scott Cameron felt the loss could be used as a building block for his young team.

“We battled nerves in the beginning, but they were able to work through a few tough races early on and finish with some solid swims,” said Cameron. “We will use this meet to build on those experiences and continue to get better throughout the season.”

The Redbirds 200-yard individual medley relay, consisting of: Rachel Root, Rachel Holm, Kristin Verkler and Sarah Thomas raced to a first place finish, with a time of 1:48.01

Savannah Rubocki finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.01) and also swam to a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:35.70), while Holm topped the field in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.75)

The Illinois State swimming and diving team will have next week off, to prepare for their next away meet against Southern Illinois.

Illinois State will be back in action to take on the Salukis, Oct. 31 in Carbondale, Illinois, at 12 p.m.
