Penn State Sweeps Emory

The Penn State men’s and women’s swimming teams swept Emory by scores of 184-107 and 184-115, respectively, Saturday in the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The women (3-0) swept the top-four scoring places in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.) led the way in the 1000 free in 10:17.65, while Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) did the same in the 200 fly in 2:04.54. The Lions also posted the top-four times in the 400 IM, led by Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo (Mexico City) in 4:19.10, but the event was exhibitioned. Gonzalez-Hermosillo also touched first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.37.

Kaitlin Jones (Midlothian, Va.), Casey Fazio (Washington Township, N.J.), and Haley Sinatro (West Hartford, Conn.) led podium sweeps in the 200 free (1:49.90), 200 back (2:03.20) and 100 fly (55.82), respectively. Jones also won the 500 free in 4:36.84, while Sinatro also claimed the 50 free in 24.10. Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Megan Wujciak (Livingston, N.J.) also claimed gold in the 100 breast (1:04.55) and 100 free (51.54), respectively.

On the men’s side the Nittany Lions (1-1) claimed the top four places in the 100 breast and the top three in the 200 free and 100 free. Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) claimed the frees in 1:41.59 and 46.16, respectively, while Andy Schuehler (Camden, N.J.) led the Lions in the 100 breast in 58.31 and also earned gold in the 100 fly (51.71). Tim Maurer was also a double event winner in the 100 (50.64) and 200 backstrokes (1:52.54).

Also picking up victories were Rory Lewis, Matt Grillo (Montreal), Michael Kwasnik (Shelby Township, Mich.) and John Nunez in the 200 fly (1:49.26), 50 free (21.03), 200 breast (2:08.52) and 500 free (4:36.84).

In the diving events, the men went unopposed, as Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) posted the top score in the 1-meter at 292.57 and Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) led the 3-meter at 347.78. Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.) led the women’s effort, placing first in the 1-meter at 292.50 and second in the 3-meter at 255.0.

Penn State will next return home to McCoy Natatorium and host Virginia Tech Friday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m.
