Pacific Men Fall to Arizona State

The Pacific Tigers fell 170-92 overall in their first men's meet of the season against Arizona State.  Coach Peter Richardson was happy with the effort from his team, saying that "we got up and raced really well…from every swim you can learn something and take a step toward a championship and that's what today was about."

Pacific started the day with a strong showing the 200 Medley Relay, finishing in second at 1:31.47, just 0.42 seconds off the leader.  Coach Richardson was particularly happy with this race, singling out captains Brandon Presswood and Neil Byers for "[making] sure the guys were ready to go" in what ended up a nail-biter of a race.  Makoa Alvarez, Yahav Shahaf, Stewart Harrison, and Mitchell Ongstad made up the relay team.

Harrison finished the 100 Free in second with at time of 45.76, a time in line with Harrison's late-season finishes last year.

Alvarez, a freshman, also won the 100 Back with a time of 49.60.  Curtis Klein took second in the event, giving Pacific the top two finishers in the 100 Back with a time of 51.30.

While Pacific was unable to take the top spot, the Tigers ended up finishing second and third in a number of events.  Jared Vu and Nicholas Nord finished behind Arizona State's Patrick Park in the 200 Fly with times of 1:56.00 and 1:57.48.  Similarly, Shahaf and Miles Mackenzie got second and third in the 50 Free at 21.24 and 21.26.  In the 500 Free, Colin Craig took second with a time of 4:46.27 and Presswood took third, finishing at 4:46.67.

Klein came away with one of Pacific's victories in the meet, winning the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.94.  He finished almost a full second ahead of the second-place finisher, who came in at 1:55.79.  Klein also had a strong showing in the 200 Back, with his time of 1:50.68 good for second.

In the 100 Fly, Vu and Alvarez again finished strong, taking second and third with times of 49.94 and 50.54, respectively.

In the final event of the day, the 400 Free Relay, the Tigers came in second with a time of 3:04.66.  Georgan Meendering, Shahaf, Mackenzie, and Harrison made up the team.

The next meet for the Tigers will be when Pacific's men's team heads to Berkeley to take on California on October 9 at 1:00 pm.  The women's season will open at the Pacific Invitational on October 23 at 7:00 pm.
