USMMA Hosts Memorial Invite

The USMMA men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams hosted the season-opening USMMA Memorial Invitational on Saturday at the O’Hara Hall Pool. Prior to the first event of the morning, the programs paid tribute to former Merchant Marine swimmers, divers and coaches who passed away this past year, specifically honoring former coach and Athletic Director Sue Petersen Lubow and Robert Byrnes, Class of ‘57.

Highlights of the day included senior diver Gerrit Porter (Houston, Texas) achieving NCAA qualifying scores by winning both boards with a 285.75 on the one-meter dive and a 326.70 on the three-meter board for the men and freshman Tyler Wickesberg (Albuquerque, N.M.) setting a new Academy record in the 100-yard freestyle for the women with a time of 54.10, coming in second place in the event.

In total, the Mariner men won 10 events on the day, while the women’s squad was victorious in seven events.

Up next, the Mariners will travel to The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., for the TCNJ Invitational, which takes place Dec. 4-6.
