Terrier Invite - Day 2

Vermont

Shannon Cowley and Haley Gula swept the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Vermont swimming & diving team on Saturday during the second day of the Terrier Invitational at Boston University. The Catamounts remained in third place overall with 385.5 points heading into the final day of competition on Sunday.

Cowley swam a time of 1:03.56 to win the 100 breast, while Gula posted a time of 1:04.83 for second as the duo combined for 37 points. Kelly Lennon took third overall in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.04, while Sarah Mantz finished seventh with a time of 1:53.22 for a total of 28 points.

Kira Hancock placed second by less than a half second in the 100-yard backstroke as she finished in 56.64 seconds just behind Colgate's Morgan Cohara. Elena Melloni earned a tie for 12th in the event with a time of 58.31, while Dani Rocheleau (58.37) and Courtney Gray (59.30) were 14th and 15th.

Gray also took eighth in the 100 fly for the Catamounts with a mark of 57.37, while Julia DeGregorio placed 12th in 58.32 for an additional five points. Lauren Punger (4:35.78) registered eighth in the 400 IM, and Audrey Shenkin won the event's Consolation Final in 4:33.40 for ninth overall.

In the relays, the 200 medley team of Gray, Cowley, Shenkin, and Christa Weaver earned fourth place with a time of 1:45.37 for 30 points. Also taking seventh for UVM were Hancock, Gula, DeGregorio, and Mantz in 1:46.27.

The 800 free relay team of Shenkin, Mantz, Abby Holmquist, and Lennon finished in 7:38.44 for fifth place and 28 points.

 

Colgate

Morgan Cohara won both the 200 free and 100 back to highlight the second day of competition for Colgate Swimming & Diving in the Terrier Invitational at Boston’s University Competition Pool.
 
Heading into the Sunday’s finale, the Raiders stand in sixth place in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Women’s Highlights

Cohara claimed her second and third races of the invitational, taking both the 200 free (1:50.76) and 100 back (56.33) on Saturday.

In the 200 free, Cohara edged Boston University’s Mika Spencer (1:50.97) to record the victory. Lindsey Sagasta (1:52.87) and Megan Gallagher (1:54.11) placed 11th and 13th, respectively, to give the Raiders a trio of top-16 finishes.

Cohara’s prelim time in the 200 free (1:49.87) was the third fastest in school history.

The 100 back saw Cohara post a .31 seconds victory over Vermont’s Kira Hancock (56.64).

Maggie Carney highlighted a trio of 10 top finishes for Coglate in the 100 butterfly, claiming seventh with a time of 57.09. Erica Silverman (57.00) and Olivia Castro (57.36) placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

Kirby took 10th (1:05.71) and Jessica Cauley claimed 12th (1:06.44) in the 100 breast. Both times placed them among the 20 fastest recorded times in program history.

The grouping of Gallagher, Michelle Dols, Silverman and Sagasta placed eighth in the 800 free, turning in a time of 7:43.61. The pairing of Flora Hanson, Cohara, Castro and Bernadette Tankle took 16th, touching the wall with a time of 7:54.38.

Colgate placed 16th in the 200 medley relay as the pairing of Fitzgerald, Kirby, Carney and Sagasta posted a time of 1:49.47.

Flora Hanson claimed 13th in the 400 IM, touching the wall with a time of 4:34.87.
 
Men’s Highlights

The 200 medley relay saw the Raiders place ninth with the quartet of Des Cairns, Tery Johnson, Danny Graham and Andrew Hacker turning in a time of 1:33.92. Their time was the fourth fastest in program history.

Paul Kersjes took 14th in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.41. He posted a season-best time of 1:42.39 during his preliminary race.

Des Cairns claimed 16th in the 100 back, turning in a time of 52.64.

The all-rookie quartet of Max Michael, Ryan Mathes, Ryan Birdsall and Anders Brekke captured 11th in the 800 free relay. The pairing turned in a time of 7:05.53 during their finals swim, more than 20 seconds faster than their pace in the preliminaries (7:26.57).

The 100 breast preliminaries saw Mathes and Johnson both establish new program top 20 times. Mathes (1:00.11) moved into 14th on the all-time list and Johnson (100:50) claimed 17th.

In the 200 free prelims, Dominic Wilkins turned in the 12th fastest time in school history (1:43.79).

Des Carins recorded the sixth fastest time in school history during the 100 butterfly prelims with a time of 50.62. Michel also recorded a top-20 time during qualifying in the 100 butterfly, landing in the 18th spot with a time of 52.08.

Brekke captured the 16th spot on Colgate’s top 20 list for the 400 IM, turning in a time of 4:17.10 during his preliminary race.
 
Colgate concludes its fall schedule with the final day of competition at the Terrier Invitational.
