St. Mary's (Md.) Sweeps SUNY Delhi

St. Mary's (Md.) Men

St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming picked up a dominant 161-24 non-conference win over SUNY Delhi Saturday afternoon. Six Seahawks recorded multiple first-place wins as St. Mary's (7-3) won every event.

Senior captain Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and junior Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) each garnered three gold medals in leading the Seahawks to their third consecutive win while seniors Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson), sophomore Lucas Delgado (Bowie, Md./Gonzaga College), and first-year Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) each won two events.

Speer tallied two individual wins in the 50 freestyle (22.26) and the 100 freestyle (49.58) before anchoring the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:32.90) with senior captain Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Burgess, and Karimi.

Braker started on the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.64) with senior Michael Abrams (Garrett Park, Md./Walter Johnson), sophomore Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), and Cassady. He then touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley (2:07.91) and captured the 100 backstroke (56.76) as well.

Burgess claimed the win in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.68 while Lilley followed in second (11:23.88). Cassady recorded an individual victory in the 200 freestyle (1:54.21) while sophomore Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) came in second in 1:55.54.

Delgado led a sweep in the 100 butterfly as he won the event in 57.05 followed by junior Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) in second (57.73) and Madden in third (58.36). Delgado and Cassady tied for first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.77.

A final Seahawk gold medal came in the 500 freestyle as Karimi won the event in 5:18.72 while sophomore Ben Ertman (Potomac, Md./Churchill) placed third (6:05.73).

Walchuck added another silver medal in the 50 freestyle (22.74) while Abrams took second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.99). Burgess picked a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.13) while junior Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finished second in the 100 backstroke (57.33).

The Seahawks will be back in action on December 4-5 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center in Richmond, Virginia.


St. Mary's (Md.) Women

St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming captured all 10 events in posting a 148-6 non-conference win over SUNY Delhi Saturday afternoon. Senior captains Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and sophomore Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) each picked up three gold medals.

McIlmail posted a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.76 as well as leading a sweep in the 100 breaststroke. She won the event in 1:14.94 followed by senior Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in second (1:23.40) and first-year Helen-Marie Castelli (Sandy Spring, Md./Good Counsel) in third (1:26.58).

McIlmail started the meet by anchoring the winning 200 medley relay (2:02.39) with Straight, Andersen, and senior captain Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson).

Straight garnered a pair of individual wins as she led a sweep of the 50 freestyle and claimed the victory in the 500 freestyle. She touched the wall first in the 50 free (27.50) with sophomore Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) in second (27.59) and Machlin in third (27.69). Straight bested first-year Emma Green (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) in the 500 free with a time of 5:42.64 and Green finished second in 5:54.85.

Straathof's individual wins came in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke as she led a sweep in both events. Straathof touched the wall first in the 200 IM in 2:20.33 followed by first-year Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley) in second (2:29.86) and Andersen in third (2:29.94).

In the 100 back, Straathof finished first in 1:06.90 followed by sophomore Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) in second (1:08.10) and junior Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK) in third (1:08.36). Straathof ended the meet by anchoring the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:51.93) with Green, Sonnenberg, and Lertora.

First-year Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) paced the Seahawks in a pair of sweeps in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Valenti won the 200 free in 2:06.96 followed by Liming in second (2:12.58) and first-year Samantha Schoenecker (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson) in third (2:16.95).

In the 100 free, Valenti touched the wall first in 58.71 followed by Machlin in second (59.29) and Sonnenberg in third (1:00.10). Schoenecker added a silver medal in the 100 butterfly (1:12.22).
