Frank Elm Invite - Day 2

Rutgers

The Rutgers swimming and diving team continued its impressive weekend, as the Scarlet Knights registered three NCAA ‘B’ qualifying standard times, three meet records, two pool records and a school record in the 1-meter dive by sophomore Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) during the Frank Elm Invitational Saturday night at the RU Aquatics Center.

Through 14 events, Navy leads the 10-team field with a score of 1417.5, followed by RU with a team total of 1052. Northeastern holds a third-place score of 715.5.

Walkowiak shattered her previous school record in the 1-meter dive, recording a mark of 321.80 in the event to capture first place. Her score was more than 14 points higher than the standard she set at 306.90 last year. Junior Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.J.) also surpassed Walkowiak’s previous standard with an impressive score of 314.85.

In the pool, Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) registered a pool and meet record in the 100 breast, hitting the wall first with a time of 1:01.70. The result, which was a lifetime best for Stoddard, qualified as a NCAA ‘B’ cut standard.

Senior Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) also produced a NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 200 free with a first-place time of 1.49.13. The mark served as a meet record and was a lifetime best for Wu.
 
Senior Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) recorded the third NCAA ‘B’ cut for Rutgers during evening action. Pfaff finished first in the event with a time of 4:18.99, her second ‘B’ cut in as many days.

The Scarlet Knights shined in the 200 medley relay, as Wu, Stoddard, Pfaff and senior Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.) recorded a first-place time of 1:41.29. The finish was both a pool and meet record in the event.

The preliminary session for the third and final portion of the Frank Elm Invitational will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. The finals of the 1650 freestyle will commence at 2 p.m., followed by the rest of the finals at 6 p.m. Session three will feature the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and the 400 freestyle relay.

 

Liberty

Following two days of competition, Liberty is currently in fifth place at the 2015 Rutgers Invitational, with round two taking place on Saturday at RU Aquatics Center.
      
The Lady Flames sit in fifth position with 534.5 points. Navy is atop the team standings at 1,417.50 followed by tournament host Rutgers with 1,052. Northeastern (715.5), James Madison (609.5) and Liberty (534.5) round out the top half of the 10-team field.
      
The meet features a similar event program as the 2016 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships. However, unlike the conference championships, the Rutgers Invitational allows for unlimited entries, leading to multiple relays and extra individuals scoring per school.
        
Liberty’s 200 medley relay opened the evening finals session with a fifth-place showing. The quartet of Victoria Tschoke, Prudence Rooker, Kendall Hough and Rachel Hoeve clocked 1:44.42.
        
The Lady Flames’ 800 free relay contingent of Alicia Finnigan, Natalie Beale, Ashlee Sall and Kristin VanDeventer finished fourth. Their time of 7:37.33 ranks fifth on the program’s all-time top five performers’ list.
        
Brooke Fox made the A Final in one-meter springboard diving with a 199.70 opening score, before placing eighth in the final, at 189.40. Madi Long qualified for the B Final in 174.25 and scored 200.00 at night for 10th place.
        
Tschoke took 10th in the 100 back with a 56.82 clocking. Tshcoke qualified in 57.00 during prelims. Hough swam 57.55 in the morning, before placing 16th overall in 58.56 at night. Natalie Beale claimed 28th in 59.07 after qualifying in 59.17. Danielle Boothe (59.38) finished 33rd overall, while Ashley Mauzy (1:02.11) took 46th.
        
Rooker touched the wall in 1:05.01 during the 100 breaststroke B final to earn 11th place overall after qualifying in 1:06.12. Anna Dickinson’s 1:06.48 B Final swim was good for 15th. Morgan Noonan clocked 1:07.36 in prelims, and lowered her season best to 1:06.64 for 20th place at night. Ricki Lee Hodges swam a season-best 1:07.83 during finals to claim 27th. Morgan Weigner earned 33rd position with a time of 1:10.75.
        
Finnigan led the way for Liberty in the 100 fly, placing 18th overall in 56.88 after a morning swim of 57.79. Ranndi Grubbs tied for 26th in finals, in a season-best time of 57.99, while Ashley Mauzy (58.50) took 29th and Natalie Beale (58.72) earned 31st. Boothe (35th place – 59.00) and Elizabeth Magnusson (48th – 1:01.43) completed morning prelims.
        
VanDeventer and Sall both posted season bests in the 200 free on Saturday. VanDeventer placed 26th overall in 1:53.81, following a qualifying swim of 1:55.21. Sall took 29th in 1:54.26, after swimming 1:54.66 in the morning. Chelsea Pond clocked a season-best 1:55.80, the 37th-fastest time in preliminary heats. Hoeve (46th – 1:56.69), Magnusson (51st – 1:57.80), Shelby Black (55th – 1:58.80), Siani Null (64th – 2:00.90) and Dani Jordan (67th – 2:01.37) rounded out Liberty’s 200 free competitors.

 

Northeastern

After day two at the Frank Elm Invitational, the Northeastern women's swimming and diving team stands in third place with 715.50 points, just behind Navy (1,417.50) and host Rutgers (1,052).
 
NU notched three more team season bests today, totaling eight thus far this invitational.
 
Season best highlights
In the 100 backstroke, Christine Leong registered a new team season best with 56.39 and earned fourth place in the A-cut final. Jordan Domeier posted a time of 4:30.52 in the 400 IM, earning eighth in the A-cut final, and Sara Touchette-McGowan picked up second place in the 100 butterfly A-cut final with 54.40.
 
1-meter dive
Caroline Gonsalves (260.15) and Alyssa Seales (244.75) finished fourth and fifth on the diving board, respectively.
 
200 medley relay
Christine Leong, Amanda Liew, Sara Touchette-McGowan and Carly Schnabel tagged the wall in 1:45.15 to finish eighth in the A-cut.
 
100 butterfly
Delaney Lanker followed Touchette-McGowan in 4th place in the A-cut final with a time of 56.16.
 
200 freestyle
Kerry Treusdell finished seventh in the B-cut final, 15th overall, with 1:53.62.
 
100 breaststroke
Amanda Liew placed second in the C-cut final with 1:06.08.
Taylor Brew followed with 1:06.18 for third place in the C-cut final.
 
800 free relay
Sara Touchette-McGowan, Kerry Treusdell, Carly Schnabel and Jordan Domeier posted a team season best with 7:37.63.

 

New Hampshire

Sophomore Liza Baykova (Moscow, Russia) highlighted the University of New Hampshire women's swimming & diving team's effort with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle during day two action of the 2015 Frank Elm Invitational on Saturday at Sonny Werblin Recreational Center.

Baykova, who cut through the water for a time of 1:51.88 in the preliminaries, advanced to the A final. She shaved off .90 seconds to clock in at 1:50.98 to take fifth overall.

The sophomore was also a part of the 200-yard medley quartet. The team of junior Sarah Broderick (Haverhill, Mass.), senior Bettina Caspersen (Lyngby, Denmark), sophomore Jessica Harper (Easthampton, Mass.) and Baykova combined for a time of 1:48.93, good for 19th in the event.

Two Wildcats competed in the 400-yard IM. Rookie Brittany Driscoll (Wallingford, Conn.) muscled out a 4:33.93 preliminary time to qualify for the B final. Driscoll trimmed off 1.68 seconds in the finals, placing 14th overall with a 4:32.25 performance. Classmate Linnea Lemerise (Brentwood, N.H.) turned in a 30th place time of 4:40.85.

Harper was the lone UNH representative that advanced to the 32-participant field swimming in the 100-yard butterfly. She was placed in the C Final after posting a time of 57.70 in the preliminary heat. She finished 22nd, slamming the panel at 57.82.

Caspersen headlined the 'Cats in the 100-yard breaststroke. After a 1:06.40 time to qualify for the B final, the senior parted the water and hit the panel at 1:06.20, good for 14th.

The final day of the Frank Elm Invitational starts Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. with preliminary events in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly. At 2:20 p.m., the meet will transition to the 1,650-yard freestyle. The finals will commence at 5 p.m. as qualifiers will compete in their respective events of the day, which also includes the three-meter dive and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The 'Cats return to the confines of Swasey Pool on Friday, Jan. 29 (5 p.m.) against America East rival University of Maine.

 

Wagner

The Wagner women's swimming & diving team broke two more school records and a meet record on the second day of the Frank Elm Invitational Saturday at Werblin Recreation Center. The Seahawks have now broken three school records through two days.
 
To start off the finals session, the women's 200 Medley Relay of junior's Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy), Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/Troy), senior Michele Detka (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado [University of Houston]) and freshman Dorian McMenemy (Northborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) touched second overall and broke the school record with a time of 1:42.25.
 
Nihipali had an impressive second night of swims, taking first place in the 100 Backstroke after being seated second going into the night session. Her first-place time of 53.69 set a new Frank Elm meet record and was also a NCAA qualifying "B" cut. Nihipali placed ninth overall in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 54.79. Both of these times are currently the fastest in the Northeast Conference (NEC).
 
Claesson led the way for the Seahawks in the 100 Breaststroke on the second day of competition. The California native swam a 1:03.22 in her morning prelim swim to be seated third overall going into finals Saturday evening. Her 1:03.22 marker set the new school record, one which she currently held as of last year (1:03.82). At finals, Claesson took third place overall, touching the wall in a time of 1:03.24. With her swim in morning prelims, the junior is just .13 of a second away from the U.S. Winter National's cut time.
 
Other standout swims came from sophomore Leahi Camacho (Kailua Kona, HI/Kealakene) who took 15th overall in the 400 IM at finals. The Hawaii native recorded a time of 4:32.33. Senior Maggie Shaw (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly), sophomore's Maddie McNichol (Downingtown, PA/Henderson) and Kirsty Hessing (Bloomington, IL/Normal Community) placed 20th, 21st and 23rd overall in the 200 Free with times of 1:53.15, 1:53.26, and 1:53.79, respectively.
 
On the 1-meter boards for diving, sophomore Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA/Methacton) took seventh place overall. The sophomore posted a total of 201.80 points to secure the seventh place finish.
 
The Seahwks concluded the evening with a 10th place finish in the 800 Free Relay. The relay team of Shaw, Camacho, Hessing and McNichol recorded a time of 7:46.07.
