Terrier Invite - Day 1

Army Men

After the first day of competition of the Terrier Invite, the Army West Point men’s swimming and diving team ranks third with 191 points. Freshman Jay Yang highlighted the evening by setting a nearly 30 year old Academy record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.52.

“It was a very productive first day,” said head coach Mickey Wender. “I think the team responded well to the level of competition and is performing great for where we are at in the training process. We are competitive even though we aren’t at a taper or shave part of our training. I was very pleased with the way the day went. Jay did an exceptional job tonight. It was a great start to what will be a great career here at Army.”

Yang touched third in the 200 IM, while also capturing the Academy record. His time of 1:49.52 topped the previous record time of 1:49.56 that was set by Army Hall of Famer John VanSant in 1986.

The Cadets started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay. Brandon McCredie, Chris Szekely, Adam Sjoholm and Evin Rude teamed up to touch the wall in 1:22.29.

Tom Ottman was Army’s top finisher in the 500 free. He placed second with a time of 4:28.68. In the 50 free, McCredie clocked a 20.62 to place fourth. 

During the 400 medley relay, the Black Knights team of Josh Sembrano, Colin Kanzari, Sean Regan and Szekely placed second with a time of 3:20.04.

The Cadets return to the pool tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the preliminary round and at 6 p.m. for the finals round of day two at the Terrier Invite. 


Army Women

After the first day of competition of the Terrier Invite, the Army West Point women’s swimming and diving team ranks first with 444 points.

“It was a very productive first day,” said head coach Mickey Wender. “I think the team responded well to the level of competition and is performing great for where we are at in the training process. We are competitive even though we aren’t at a taper or shave part of our training. I was very pleased with the way the day went.”

Molly Mucciarone finished first in the 50 free. She touched the wall in 23.07, which was 0.22 seconds quicker than the next-best finisher. In the 200 IM, Jess Burkett topped the Black Knights with a time of 2:06.38 to place sixth. 

Sabrina Mortell and Meaghan McGovern placed fourth and fifth in the 500 free as Army’s top two finishers. Mortell touched the wall in 4:54.61, while McGovern clocked a 4:59.61. Monica Sowinski was eighth in the event with a time of 5:06.62.

The Black Knights closed-out the first day of competition with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Kelly Hamilton, Kara Wineinger, Mucciarone and Sowinski clocked a 3:47.81 to place first. 

 

Colgate

Colgate Swimming & Diving established 14 program top 20 times and set a rookie school record to highlight the first day of competition in the Terrier Invitational Friday at Boston University’s Competition Pool.
 
After the opening day of the three-day event, the Raiders find themselves in sixth place in both the men’s and women’s meets. The Men hold a 60-point edge over seventh place Fairfield, while the women are just 33 points back of fifth-place Boston College.

In the 200 free relay, the pairing of Carter Christensen, Milos Gak, Paul Jersjes and Andrew Hacker placed sixth with a time of 1:25.21. The time was the sixth fastest in school history.

The grouping of Max Michael, Nicholas Konovalov, Ryan Mathes and Trey Johnson also scored points for the Raiders in the race, placing 15th with a time of 1:32.57. Their time set a rookie program record.

Kersjes took seventh in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.22. In the preliminaries, Kersjes swam a 4:34.77, the fourth fastest time in the event in program history.

Hacker and Christensen gave the Raiders two top-eight finishes in the 50 free sprint race. Hacker claimed sixth (20.82) and Christensen (21.02) was just behind him in eighth.

The 400 medley relay saw Colgate claim 14th as the grouping of Danny Graham, Mathes, Konovalov and Hacker posted a time of 3:31.22.
 
Morgan Cohara claimed the 500 free in dramatic fashion, posting a time of 4:51.45 to edge Stephanie Nasson of Boston University (4:51.56).

Bernadette Tankle placed sixth (5:04.37), Lindsey Sagasta took seventh (4:59.38) and Michelle Dols claimed 13th (5:02.91) in the 500 free to give the Raiders four top-16 finishes. All four times rank among the top 20 in program history.

The preliminaries of the 500 free saw both Sagasta (4:59.38) and Tankle (4:59.96) post new personal bests.

Erica Silverman placed 10th in the 200 IM, touching the wall with a time of 2:06.41. Her time matches the ninth fastest in the 200 IM in school history.

It was a fifth-place finish for the pairing of Cohara, Kirby, Silverman and Sagasta in the 400 medley relay. The quartet posted a time of 3:52.13, just ahead of sixth-place Vermont (3:52.14). The grouping of Flora Hanson, Jessica Cauley, Maggie Carney and Megan Gallagher also scored points for Colgate, claiming 16th (4:02.36).

The pairing of Jessica Cauley, Olivia Castro, Maggie Carney and Madison Fitzgerald placed 15th in the 200 free relay (1:39.09).
 
Colgate is back in action Saturday with the second day of competition at the Terrier Invitational.

 

Vermont

The Vermont women's swimming & diving team sits in third place after day one of the Terrier Invitational at Boston University with 154 points. The Catamounts trail Army (253) and host BU (221) with two days of competition remaining.

Christa Weaver led UVM in the individual events on Friday as the senior placed fourth overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.65 seconds. Kira Hancock finished eighth in the Championship Final with her time of 24.21, while Lauren Punger finished seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.75. Shannon Cowley was 11th in the event with a mark of 2:08.03 and Haley Gula was 14th in 2:09.73. Kelly Lennon was also 11th in the 500 free with a time of 5:00.04.

Vermont took fourth overall in the 200-yard free relay as Sarah Mantz, Hancock, Courtney Gray, and Weaver posted a time of 1:34.83. Jess Gorham, Abby Holmquist, Dani Rocheleau, and Elena Melloni placed ninth in the event with a time of 1:37.56, while Audrey Shenkin, Diane Brown, Stefi Geiger, and Emily McCormack followed in 10th with a time of 1:38.02.

In the 400 medley relay, the team of Rocheleau, Gula, Punger, and Mantz registered a time of 3:52.14 for sixth place. Melloni, Kristina Posnick, Shenkin, and Brown finished in 3:57.27 for 12th overall.
