Assumption Stops Sacred Heart

The Assumption College swimming and diving team claimed a 177-83 victory over division I Sacred Heart on Senior Day at the Plourde Pool on Saturday. The Hounds took first in 11 of 16 events in the win. 

Prior to the competition, the Hounds recognized five seniors who swam in their final home meet of the season on Saturday including Rachel Ferris (Stephentown, N.Y. / Berlin), Caroline Flynn (North Attleboro, Mass. / Bishop Feehan), Janelle McDonald (Lakeville, Mass. / Middleboro), Maggie Ptaszynski (Cheshire, Conn. / Cheshire) and Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony).

Weber claimed two victories on the day in the 100 backstroke with her time of 1:00.64 and in the 100 butterfly with her time of 1:01.24. The senior also finished second in the 100 freestyle in 55.85.

Freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) clocked a season-best time in the 200 freestyle with her first-place time of 1:58.66 and also claimed a victory in the 500 freestyle with her solid time of 5:17.49.

Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) also claimed two wins on the day in the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. Morgan, who holds the Assumption record in both events, finished the 200 back in 2:13.38 before claiming the 200 IM in 2:16.10.

Morgan was also the lead leg in the Hounds' 400 medley relay squad that kicked off the meet with a victory. The team consisted of Morgan, junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland), freshman Kelsey Kozikowski (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) and sophomore Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa) and clocked in at 4:12.31.

Gagnon also claimed two individual victories on the day, clocking a time of 1:12.01 in the 100 breaststroke before touching the wall in 2:37.66 in the 200 breaststroke.

Additional impressive performances by the Hounds include junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River), who earned a victory in the 1,000 freestyle with her time of 11:10.94, and freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School), who won the 200 butterfly in 2:14.41.

Saturday's victory marks the Hounds' 12th consecutive victory at home at the Plourde Pool. Assumption continues its winning streak as it has not lost a dual-meet at home since Nov. 18, 2011.

The victory also marks Assumption's fifth in a row this season in dual-meet competition.

The Hounds return to action on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21, at the URI Invitational in a two-day competition.
