A misread on entry limits cost the Tennessee women a won over SEC rival Arkansas. Prior to the meet, the head coaches from Arkansas and Tennessee agreed to swim the NCAA 15 Event order, leaving out a Medley Relay. In doing so, it limited each swimmer to a maximum of three events instead of the four which is customary in a 16-event order.

The Razorbacks (4-0, 2-0) lead by three points heading into the final event, thinking they needed a victory in 400 freestyle relay to get the win. The Volunteer quartet of Harper Bruens, Madeline Banic, Micah Bohon and Faith Johnson crushed the Razorbacks 3:21.53 to 3:26.07. When CollegeSwimming.com requested results from the meet on Sunday, however, we were told by representatives from Tennessee that the meet "wasn't official yet."
Upon further review it was revealed that all four members of Tennessee's relay had used up their swims and were subsequently disqualified. The scoring of the meet was changed upon review of the meet referee and NCAA rules secretary Brian Gordon. Here is the statement from the SEC:
In the 2015-16 and 2016-17 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Rules, Rule 5, Section 3, Article 1a states: “A contestant is permitted to compete in a maximum of three events (in any combination of individual and/or relay events) during a men’s or women’s 13- or 15-event dual, double-dual, triangular or quadrangular meet. This limit also applies during a concurrent men’s and women’s 26- or 30-event dual, double dual, triangular or quadrangular meet.”
Two swimmers for Tennessee swam four events in the meet, with their fourth event being part of the Tennessee “A” team in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Following the review of the NCAA Rule Book, the “A” relay for Tennessee was disqualified. Because of that, the Arkansas “A” took first place, Tennessee “B” second place and Tennessee “D” third place. The scoring for that event resulted in the new point total to be Arkansas 11, Tennessee 6, and in turn changed the final team scores to Arkansas 146.5 and Tennessee 136.5, giving Arkansas the win.
This decision was made by the meet referee and the NCAA Rules Editor for Swimming & Diving. Rule 4, Section 6, Article 1h states: “After the conclusion of the last event of a meet, verify the scorer’s tabulation of the results of each event and, if the tabulation is found to be correct, sign such tabulation thus establishing the official score. A meet score is subject to review and may be corrected by the meet committee within 30 subsequent days for championships competition or by the meet referee within seven subsequent days for other competition.”
With the change, Arkansas enjoyed its first-ever win over Tennessee. Disqualification or not, the Razorbacks proved lights out, winning the first three events. Had the Volunteers removed Bruens from the 100 backstroke, and had the Volunteers won the relay, they would have taken home a 142-141 victory.
