UCLA Cruises Past Arizona State; Air Force Men Beat Sun Devils

Shaking off Friday's loss to Arizona, the UCLA swimming and diving squad cruised past Arizona State, 180-116, in Saturday's dual meet.  The Bruin freshmen made the biggest splash, as Caroline McTaggart, Sandra Soe, and Emma Schanz each posted double wins at the event.

McTaggart swam the top marks in the 100 Free and 100 Fly.  Her 54.31 in the 100 Fly was good enough for an NCAA "B" qualifying time.

Soe won both distance freestyle events.  In the 1000 Free, Soe crushed the competition, finishing nine seconds ahead of the second place mark.  In the 500 Free, the Bruin newcomer swam a 4:58.59, edging teammate Michaela Merlihan.

Schanz posted wins in the 100 Back (56.43) and the 200 Breast (2:18.97).

In diving, Maria Polyakova won the 3-meter event with a 304.70 while Annika Lenz finished second with a 276.95. Polyakova was just shy of another sweep of the diving events, as ASU's Mara Aiacoboae edged the Bruin by 1.05 points.

Next up, UCLA diving heads across town for the Trojan Diving Invitational, to be held Nov. 13-15. Bruin swimming has a short hiatus before hitting the pool for the A3 Invitational in Monterey Park, Calif.  The event will take place Nov. 19-21.

Air Force

The Air Force men’s swimming team completed a weekend sweep and remained undefeated this season with a 158-142 win over Arizona State, Saturday, Nov. 7, in Tempe, Ariz.

The Falcons (8-0 overall) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay as the team of Devon Davis, Michael Barnosky, Kevin Mitchell and Michael Hannigan swam a 1:28.92.

In the second event, the Falcons’ depth showed as Kevin Jackson (15:53.84) was second, Garrett Glaudini (16:03.66) was third and Collin Green was fourth ( 16:21.93).

The Falcons then took the top four places in the 100 back as Devon Davis won (47.96), Joey Gebhart was second (50.43), Corey Gutierrez was third (51.51) and Kris Tillery was fourth (51.42). Davis was also second in the 100 fly (49.42) later in the meet.

Air Force took the top two spots in the 100 breast stroke as Michael Barnosky won (54.71) and Kevin Fanter was second (55.78). Barnosky also won the 200 breast stroke with 1:52.42.

Jordan Dahle won the 200 free (1:39.37) while Andrew Faciszewski won the 500 free (4:34.14) and Kevin Fanter was second (4:35.02).

Nathanael Zillweger won the 1-meter diving with 302.80 and was second on 3-meter with 328.75 points.

“We won another tough one today,” head coach Rob Clayton said. “Devon Davis set school and service academy record in the back stroke. Michael Barnosky won a couple of events and Andrew Faciszewski came from behind to win. Nate Zillweger beat a couple of All-Americans in diving. We have a big battle with Wyoming this coming week up in Laramie and hope to keep it rolling into the Texas A&M meet in a couple weeks.”

The Falcon men’s swimming team faces long-time rival Wyoming, on Nov. 12 at 2 pm in Laramie, Wyo.  As part of the same meet, the Air Force and Wyoming men’s diving teams will compete at the Academy on Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. in the Cadet Natatorium.
