A&M Men Clip Florida Atlantic

The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team improved to 4-0 with a 137-87 takedown of the FAU Owls on Saturday at the FAU Aquatic Center.

The No. 20 Aggies, who were 2-0 on their road swing through Florida, won 12 of 13 events against the Owls, including sweeping at least the top three spots in nine events. The Aggies opened their road swing with a win over Indian River State College on Thursday.

“The purpose of this trip was to bond and get closer as a team, while also getting some great racing under our belts against good competition,” Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. “Usually on road trips we try to make everything perfect, but we purposefully tried to put them in situations that weren’t perfect to see how they would respond and I think they responded really well and raced really well.”

Winning multiple events on Saturday for the Aggies were junior Jacob Gonzales and freshman Angel Martinez. Gonzales swept the 50 free (20.75) and the 100 free (45.50), while Martinez won the 400 IM (4:01.43) and the 200 butterfly (1:50.09).

Grabbing solo victories for the Aggies were sophomore Miha Berhat in the 1,000 free (9:33.71), senior Mateo Muzek in the 200 free (1:41.57), freshman Sam Thornton in the one-meter dive (378.45), senior Alexandro Theocharidis in the 200 back (1:51.18), senior Hunter Funk in the 500 free (4:41.13) and sophomore Mauro Castillo in the 200 breast (2:00.76).

The Aggies opened and closed the meet with strong relay victories. The foursome of Theocharidis, Castillo, freshman Mateo Gonzalez and sophomore Brock Bonetti won the 400 medley relay in 3:22.86, and the Aggies closed the meet with a win in the 200 free relay with junior Turker Ayar, sophomore Austin Van Overdam, freshman Magnus Holler and junior Juan Rocha touching in 3:09.36.
