Wingate Leads Lenoir-Rhyne Quad

The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams top the leader boards after the first day of two-day, two-city quad meet Friday at the Shuford Physical Education Center Pool on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University. In addition to Wingate and the host L-R Bears, Catawba and Limestone are competing in this event (day one results).

On the men's side, Wingate has 261 points. Limestone is next with 230, followed by Catawba with 117 and Lenoir-Rhyne with 114. In the women's section, Wingate has 275 points. Limestone follows with 197.5 with Lenoir-Rhyne (112) and Catawba (104.5) occupying the third and fourth spots, respectively.

"We started a little flat this afternoon," Wingate head coach Kirk Sanocki says. "Our relays started to flow and we saw some nice stuff. We have folks swimming in off-events...and I liked what I saw. I believe as the day progressed, we handled ourselves well...we had a nice team effort."

Wingate Women

Wingate junior Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) won two individual events for the Bulldogs. Petrenko touched first in the 200 Individual Medley, leading a 1-2-3 Wingate finish with her time of 2:07.46. Later in the evening, Petrenko won the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:08.25.

Bulldog senior Ana Fish (Carthage, N.C.) and juniors Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia), Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) and Caitlin Coughlin (Cochranville, Pa.) each had a hand in two victories. Fish and Coughlin swam one leg each of Wingate's victorious 200 Freestyle Relay (1:39.01), while Fish picked up an individual triumph in the 100 Freestyle (53.99).

Coughlin ended her day as she started it, teaming with Arkhipova, Weiss and sophomore Leigh-Ann Clark (Newport News, Va.) to win the gold medal in the 400 Medley Relay (3:54.57). Individually, Arkhipova won the 200 Backstroke (2:05.37), while Weiss touched first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.46).

Wingate Men

Wingate sophomore Jerome Heidrich (Hamburg, Germany) won two individual events for the Bulldogs. Heidrich touched first in the 500 Freestyle (4:42.47) and the 100 Freestyle (47.07). In the 100 Free, Wingate swimmers claimed first, second and third place as redshirt freshman Lennart Queiss (Langen, Germany) and junior Lucas Cuadros (Cali, Colombia) earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Bulldog freshman Niklas Martin (Kempton, Germany) won the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:57.45, while junior Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany) touched first in the 200 Individual Medley with his triumphant time of 1:57.38. In the 200 IM, Wingate swimmers finished in the top four spots Friday.

Day two of the quad meet will be contested south of the border in Gaffney, S.C. On Saturday, Wingate, Catawba and L-R venture to Limestone to complete the weekend event (11 a.m. first swim). Limestone will provide live video and live results.

 

Catawba

Catawba picked up individual wins in the women's 500 free and the men's 200 back on the opening night of a two-day, two-town Quad Meet featuring Catawba, Wingate, Limestone and Lenoir-Rhyne. Friday's action took place at the Shuford Physical Education Center Pool on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University. The event moves to Limestone's Timkin Center on Saturday.

Marcia-Mariel Erhart claimed the win for Catawba in the 500 free as she posted a time of 5:14.26. Dominik Brus claimed a victory in the 200 back, touching in a time of 1:53.63. Brus' time ranks 13th on the all-time list.

Erhart came back to swim the second fastest time in school history in the 200 fly. Her time of 2:14.01 was a little over a second off the school mark and placed her fourth in the event. Jess Daniel would finish seventh (2:23.87) in the 200 fly and Palmer Benson was eighth (2:26.08). Benson was fourth in the 100 breast (1:12.06).

Nadine Brockmann swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 free (55.25) and was fifth in the 500 free (5:20.81). Amy Cujas placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:17.70) and Paula Garcia was ninth in the 200 back (2:15.95).

Ali Hegazi had a pair of top five swims for the Catawba men. He was second in the 500 free (4:42.74) and fifth in the 100 free (48.65). Jevgenij Gamper placed third in the 100 breast (59.08) and Rafal Baran was fourth in the 200 fly (1:59.67). Brus finished sixth in the 200 IM (2:02.24).
