UNC Leads Louisville

The University of North Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads posted early leads against Louisville Friday at Koury Natatorium in the first half of a two-day meet. The men are leading 107-59, while the women are up 115-52.

“I’m really proud of them,” said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. “[I’m] mostly proud of how they are going about things. They are very into the team and one another’s success. They are doing the little things well. They have a great chemistry, separately for the women, separately for the men, but also combined.”

On the men’s side, Carolina won five of seven events as well as both relays. The women placed first in seven of nine events, including both relays.

Matt Conway posted a career-best time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:46.63), surpassing his previous best time in the event of 1:47.06.

“Matt has battled back from some injuries that could have really hampered his career,” said DeSelm. “He did the rehab that was necessary and he kept the faith and he came back and is swimming faster than ever.”

Additionally, six individuals had season-best times in the meet. Kurt Wohlrab had a season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 55.10. Nic Graesser went a season-best in the 200 back (1:46.47), and Logan Heck had a season-best time of 44.14 in the 100-yard freestyle. On the women’s side, Katie Munch had a season-best time in the 200-yard IM at 2:02.58. Ally Hardesty had a season-best in the 100 free at 49.11, and Sarah Koucheki clocked a season-best time in the 200 fly (1:58.64).

“Part of why we [have two day meets] is to rehearse swimming multiple sessions in a row,” said DeSelm. “You have to be able to be in shape and keep your head on and be able to endure the length. I want us to practice that tomorrow. And I want us to not rest on our laurels; the meet is only half over. Louisville is a really good team, and they likely will come storming back.”

North Carolina will return to Koury Natatorium Saturday at 9 a.m. to complete the dual meet in its first home ACC matchup of the season.
