Purdue Sweeps Iowa

Seven different Boilermakers won two events, leading the Purdue swimming and diving teams to a dual-meet sweep of Iowa on Friday evening at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The No. 23 Purdue women won 13 of the 16 events to emerge victorious 179-112 and improve to 5-1 (3-1 B1G) in dual-meet action. The Purdue men won 12 events, including both relays, to best the Hawkeyes 188-112, improving to 3-2 (2-1 B1G) in dual meets.

The Purdue women had at least the top two finishers in nine events and the men did likewise in five events. New team season-best times were posted by both of the men’s victorious relay teams as well as nine individual event winners. New team season-best times were posted by five event winners for the women.

Marat Amaltdinov headlined the group of seven Boilermakers to win two events, posting NCAA provisional-qualifying times (B cuts) that doubled as team season bests in the men’s 100 (55.04) and 200 breaststroke (1:58.07). Allie Davis swept the women’s distance freestyle events, posting her own B cut time in the 500 freestyle (4:47.41).

Filip Bujoczek swept the 100 and 200 freestyle, winning the 100 from lane one. He also anchored the 400 free relay team to victory. Josh Brooks swept the distance freestyle events after finishing both with a strong kick that allowed the junior to take control of the races down the stretch.

Meagan Lim swept the butterfly events after out touching Iowa’s Kelly McNamara by four hundredths of a second in the 100. She was also the runner up in the 100 individual medley.

Joe Cifelli (1-meter and 3-meter diving) and Grace Hernandez (50 and 100 free) also won two events. Hernandez was the runner up behind Kaersten Meitz in the 200 free as well.

Emily Fogle improved on her NCAA provisional-qualifying and team-best time while winning the 100 breast in 1:01.23.

Freshmen Maddie Barta (200 back) and Erik Juliusson (200 IM) recorded the first event victories of their collegiate careers Friday. Their classmate Breanna Robinson (100 back) was also an event winner after out touching teammate Hanna House by five hundredths of a second.

Samm Reese led the way on the springboards for the Purdue women, winning on 3-meter after finishing second to teammate on Mary Beth Dunnichay on 1-meter.

The Purdue men opened the night with a win in the 200 medley relay. Adam Johnston anchored the quartet to victory with a 50-yard freestyle split of 19.69, following up Austin Flager’s strong split (21.49) on the butterfly leg that allowed the Boilermakers to rally for the event win. Flager and Johnston also finished one-two in the 50 free. Stephen Seliskar, Josh Ehrman and Flager contributed to both relay winners.

The Purdue women had the top three finishers in five events, including the top four in the 200 fly and 1,000 free.

The Boilermakers are idle from competition next week as they gear up for the three-day, six-session Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 20 to 22. The Purdue Invitational is back on the schedule this year for the first time since November 2012.

 

Iowa Men

The University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team dropped a 188-112 decision at Purdue on Friday night at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Hawkeyes won four events in the dual.

"Congratulations to Purdue for out-performing us in the pool and on the boards tonight.” said UI head coach Marc Long.  “We had some great individual efforts and wins, but in the end it wasn't enough as a team. We're eager to get better and perform better the next opportunity we get."

Iowa opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of redshirt freshman Kenneth Mende  senior Roman Trussov, sophomore Jerzy Twarowski, and senior Jackson Allen touched second with a time of 1:30.07.

Mende also posted two additional wins during the meet. The Germany native swam to a first place showing in the 100-back in 49.03 and in the 200-back in 1:49.11.

Iowa also got a pair of first-place finishes from Twarowski in the fly events.  The sophomore won the 100 fly in 48.50 seconds and the 200 fly in 1:49.28.

Trussov swam to a pair of runner-up finishes. He swam into second in the 100 breast, pushing to a time of 55.49, a season-best. He was also second in the 200 breast in 2:01.25. Trussov also tallied a third-place finish in the 200 IM, swimming to a time of 1:53.68.

The Hawkeyes had a pair of swimmers tie for third place in the 200 free when senior David Ernstsson and Kyle Gannon both touched in 1:41.31.  Allen, meanwhile, sprinted to a third-place finish in the 50 free in 20.75 seconds.

Junior Jackson Halsmer finished as the runner-up in the 100 free, sprinting to a time of 45.76 seconds.

Freshman Ben Colin paced the Hawkeyes in the distance events, swimming to a pair of top three finishes.  He swam a season-best time in the 1,000 free (9:36.75) placing third, and touched in second place in 4:35.06 in the 500, also a season best. 

Iowa closed out the night with a runner-up finish in the 400-free relay. The quartet of freshman Jack Smith, Ernstsson, freshman Matt Kamin, and Halsmer swam to a time of 3:02.14.

In the diving well, the Hawkeyes had four of the top five scores on the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Will Brenner placed second with a score of 331.20, followed by junior Brandis Heffner with a score of 323.48.

On the 3-meter Brandis Heffner took third. Heffner dove to a score of 341.55.

Iowa will return to the pool Dec. 4-6, hosting the Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. It is the team's first championship-style meet of the season.


Iowa Women

The University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team dropped a 179-117 Big Ten Conference dual to No. 23 Purdue on Friday night at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.  The Hawkeyes won three events in the competition.

Iowa opened the meet by winning the 200-medley relay. The quartet of senior Allie Orvis, junior Emma Sougstad, freshman Kelly McNamara, and senior Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:42.52.

Sougstad also won a pair of individual events to go along with a runner-up finish.  The Forest City, Iowa, native touched out in first place in the 100 IM (57.38) and 200 breast (2:16.43).  She was the runner-up in the 100 breast in 1:02.23 -- an NCAA “B” cut time. 

Kabacinski tallied a trio of top three finishes in the dual.  She finished second in the 50 free in 23.79 and third in the 100 (52.41) and 200 free (1:51.10). 

The Hawkeyes had a pair of backstrokers finish in the top three in the 100 back.  Sophomore Rowan Hauber was fourth in 57.34 seconds, while sophomore Meghan Lavelle swam to a third place finish with a time of 2:05.46.

McNamara swam to a runner-up showing in the 100 fly, touching in 54.89 seconds. 

Freshman Abbey Schneider paced the Hawkeyes in the distance free. She touched in second place in the 500 free in 4:59.50.

Iowa closed out the night with a second-place finish in the 400-free relay, touching in at a time of 3:30.52. The relay featured the quartet of junior Taylor Flummerfelt, sophomore Nikol Lagodzinska, McNamara, and Lavelle.

Sophomore Morgan Rafferty led the Hawkeyes in the diving well, placing a fourth place finish in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 262.73.

She also took third in the 3-meter, posting a score of 289.20.
