N.C. State Men Fall to Cal

Despite earning five wins and one podium sweep during day one on the west coast, the No. 5 NC State men's swimming and diving team fell to No. 2 California, 170.5-127.5, Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatic Center.

The Wolfpack moves to 1-1 on the regular season while the Golden Bears improve to 3-0 on it's dual season.

The Pack started off the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Hennessey Stuart, Andreas Scheillerup, Ryan Held and Simonas Bilis tabbed a time of 1:28.85. 

NC State capped off its outing with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. The squad of Held, Joe Bonk, Soren Dahl and Bilis posted a mark of 2:55.46, which stands as the fastest time in the country in the event. 

Sophomore Anton Ipsen swept the distance free events. In the 1,650 he touched the wall in 15:06.66 to mark the fastest time in the country by 11 seconds. He stopped the clock at 4:20.29 in the 500 to post a season-best mark. 

Dahl finished second in the 200 free with a mark of 1:37.27, while Bilis, Held and Bonk swept the podium in the 50 free. 

Bilis, who is consistently breaking the 20.00 barrier, posted a time of 19.87 to win the event, while Held and Bonk followed with marks of 20.41 and 20.50, respectively.

Bilis also took the top honor in the 100 free after posting a mark of 43.40, which stands as the No. 3 time in the nation. 

Stuart and Schiellerup finished third and fourth, in respective order, in the 100 backstroke. Stuart swam a time of 48.40 while Scheillerup stopped the clock at 48.44 to earn an NCAA 'B' mark.

Stuart also placed third in the 200 back after recording a mark of 1:45.19.

Derek Hren earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a time of 55.59, while Patrik Schwarzenbach finished third in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:02.18.

Christian McCurdy placed third in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:47.62, while Dahl finished second in the 200 fly after tabbing a time of 47.87.

Freshman Justin Ress earned a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley, as he finished in 1:49.09.

Sophomore Harrison Mitchell won the three-meter dive, posting a mark of 308.55 to earn a season-best standing, and finished second in the one-meter competition with a mark of 299.78.

The Pack will head to Palo Alto, Calif., to face No. 7 Stanford Saturday. The meet is set for a 3 p.m. ET start at Avery Aquatic Center.
