Carleton Swept by St. Thomas

Carleton Men

In its first dual meet of the 2015-16 season, the Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team took on the defending MIAC Champions from the University of St. Thomas. The Knights won six events, including both relays. The Tommies won the men’s competition, 175-121, helping St. Thomas in its efforts to maintain possession of the Margate Memorial Trophy.
 
The meet started and concluded with the two closest races of the evening. Competition began with the 200-yard medley, and the Knights quartet of Jonathan Brodie (Sr./Fremont, Calif./Washington), Tiernan Foster-Smith (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School), Stephen Grinich (Sr./McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville), and Karl Schwarzkopf (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest) claimed the win as they posted a time of 1:37.78, out-touching the St. Thomas entry by only 0.02 second.
 
The Knights closed the meet with another victory, this one in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Schwarzkopf, Grinich, Foster-Smith, and Wilson Josephson (Sr./Mount Hermon, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) combined on a time of 1:27.39, besting the Tommies by 0.05 second.
 
Between the two relay triumphs, the Knights won four other events. Schwarzkopf and Brodie finished 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 53.41 and 55.50, respectively. Schwarzkopf also prevailed in the 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of 2:00.66.
 
Grinich claimed the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with his time on 21.75. He and Josephson notched another 1-2 finish for Carleton in the 100-yard butterfly, recording times of 52.93 and 53.86, respectively.
 
Other second-place finishes for the Carleton include:
• Alex Mathson (Jr./Verona, Wis./Verona) in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:02.68 and the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:29.57.
• Foster-Smith in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:01.21.
• Josephson in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:59.73 and 100-yard freestyle at 48.53.
• Seth Waag-Swift (Jr./Middlefield, Mass.) on the 1-meter board and Jlor Dizon (Sr./Alameda, Calif./College Prep) on the 3-meter diving board.
 
Carleton will take part in the 10th Annual Ted Mullin "Hour of Power" Relay on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.


Carleton Women

Junior Maria Wetzel (Salem, Ore./West Salem) and first-year Caroline Mather (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) won events as the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team hosted the University of St. Thomas on Friday night. The Tommies’ depth was too much the for the Knights to handle this time as the visitors kept hold on the Margate Memorial Trophy.
 
Wetzel won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.85. The Knights other event triumph came in the 50-yard freestyle as Mather and Anisa Lester (So./Corte Madera, Calif./The Branson School) finished 1-2 by posting times of 25.31 and 26.40, respectively.
 
Other top finishes for the Knights:
• Amy Roach (So./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) was second in the 1-meter diving competition with her score of 201.25, putting her within 1.4 points of the victor. Lydia Henderson (Sr./Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) narrowly edged Roach for second place on the 3-meter board, 184.85 to 182.75
• Halie Langanki (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View) in the 200-yard butterly at 2:25.44.
• Brittany Salazar (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf) in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:34.04.
• Alex Braiedy (Jr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:03.80.
• Wetzel, Anna Gergely (Fy./Denver, Colo./Jewish Day School), Braiedy, and Mather in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:55.61.
 
The Knights will step away from competition to take part in the 10th Annual Ted Mullin "Hour of Power" Relay on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
