Arkansas Tops Tennessee

The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team extended their win streak against the No. 10 University of Tennessee, Friday in the Jones Aquatic Center.

The Razorbacks (4-0, 2-0) lead by three points heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The lineup consisted of Maddie Monroe, Natalie Burnett, Nina Drolc and Rachel Stoehr finishing first in the event to win the dual meet. Winning 146.5 to 136.5, the Razorbacks defeated the Volunteers for the first time in Arkansas history. Arkansas is now 1-7 against Tennessee.

“The team showed up to compete today and they did that with Razorback pride.” Head coach Sean Schimmel said. “They performed and competed exceptionally well against the No. 10 ranked team in the country.”

Anna Mayfield had an outstanding afternoon for the Razorbacks, sweeping her individual events and having season best times. Mayfield first notched a 54.51 seconds in the 100 back before going 1:48.21 in the 200 free. In her last individual event of the day, she beats her season best time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:50.87. Mayfield was named National Swimmer of the Week after the Rice Invitational.

Madison Strathman and Natalie Burnett were the other Razorbacks to have multiple wins. Freshman Strathman swept the breaststroke races in 1:04.39 and 2:16.95. Strathman had a life time best time in the 200 breaststroke by three seconds. She also swam in the 200 IM, finishing seventh in 2:08.19. Like Strathman, junior Burnett dominated in the 100 fly taking first with a time of 55.06. She had season best times in the 100 fly and 50 free. Burnett finished third in the 50 free (23.66), tying with Micah Bohon of Tennessee.

Aiden Lister and Maddie Monroe finished in the top 3 in both of their events. Lister finished second in the 1000 free (10:11.57) and third in the 500 free in 4:57.80. Monroe had two season best times in both her individual events at Tennessee. She finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.42) behind teammate, Mayfield and third in the 100 freestyle (50.67).

Freshman Sydney Angell and freshman Chloe Hannam had strong swims against Tennessee. Angell finished third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.54 seconds and second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.69 seconds. She had a season best time in the 200 breaststroke. Hannam dominated the 200 backstroke, winning first in 1:59.03 seconds. She also finished third in the 200 IM in 2:04.30 seconds.

Having a season best time in the 200 fly, Chelsea Tatlow finished second with a time of 2:01.46. Nina Drolc finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (51.37) and fifth in the 50 freestyle in 24.10 seconds.

Olivia Weekley, Rachel Stoehr, Jordan Kimmey, Mary Margaret Soderberg and Taylor Weiss were among the other Razorbacks who scored.

“Winning more than half of the events, I am extremely proud of our team.” Schimmel said

DIVING:

Sweeping the one and three meter dive, sophomore Nicole Gillis had season best scores in both competitions. She scored 316.13 points in the three meter and 298.43 in the one meter dive.

“Nicole had a great meet with a personal record on the one meter and a solid three meter performance.” Diving head coach Jeff DiNicola said.

Teammates Shelby Bartlett and Hannah Bortnick finished 4th and 5th in the both the three meter and one meter competition.  A score of 283.05, Bartlett had a season best in the three meter diving.

“It was a tough contest, but I think our divers dove well as a group. Arkansas definitely turned some heads to notice us a whole team, both swimming and diving from our performance this weekend.” DiNicola said.

The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational from Nov. 19-21st.
