Michigan Sweeps Penn State, Splits with Virginia

Michigan Men

The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won nine more events on the second day of its tri-meet, cruising to wins over Penn State, 217-123, and Virginia, 207-135, on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Canham Natatorium.

Michigan was nearly unbeatable on Sunday, winning with depth in sprint, mid-distance and distance. It went 1-2-3-4 in five events, before every non-event winner was exhibitioned, picking up seven NCAA 'B' times. Before the swimmers were exhibitioned, there were 24 top-three finishes up for grabs in the individual events on Sunday, and U-M swimmers claimed 21 of them.

Senior Dylan Bosch won two more events on Sunday to bring his weekend total to four, swimming to NCAA 'B' cuts in both the 100-yard butterfly (47.72) and 400-yard IM (3:53.09). Other swimmers picking up the 'B' cut included senior Anders Lie Nielsen in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.19), senior Peter Brumm in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.71) and junior Chris Klein in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:59.47). Klein's swim was one of the gutsiest of the day, as he touched the wall just ahead of Virginia's Yannick Kaeser, reversing the results of the 100-yard breaststroke from yesterday.

Sophomore PJ Ransford continued his strong start to the season, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle by almost eight seconds (9:06.92). The Wolverines had two sprinters eclipse the 20-second barrier in the very next event, as sophomore Paul Powers (19.75) took first, followed closely by junior Jason Chen (19.98).

The other individual-event winner on the day was sophomore Tristan Sanders in the 100-yard backstroke (48.94).

Michigan also took first both relays to bookend the meet. The team of sophomore Aaron Whitaker, Klein, fifth-year senior Jeremy Raisky and Powers won the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.58), while Powers, Chen, sophomore Evan White and Nielsen combined to take the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:55.97).

Freshman Collin DeShaw was impressive on three-meter, taking third (298.75), just missing the NCAA Zone Diving cut.

The Michigan divers are next in action, competing at the USC Diving Invitational from Nov. 13-15 in Los Angeles, California. The next competition for the swimmers is AT&T Winter Nationals, set to be held Dec. 2-5 in Federal Way, Washington.

Michigan Women

Senior captain Ali DeLoof won a pair of events to lead the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team to a split on the second day of its tri-meet, defeating No. 20 Penn State, 226-127, but dropping a close decision to No. 4 Virginia, 188-165, on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Canham Natatorium.

The eldest of three sisters on this year's squad, A. DeLoof was spectacular on Sunday, winning the 50-yard freestyle (22.64) and 100-yard backstroke (52.95), picking up NCAA 'B' cuts in both events. Her swim in the latter event was most impressive, as she out-touched last year's NCAA runner-up, Courtney Bartholomew (Virginia), by four hundredths-of-a-second to win. The team's other individual-event winner of the day was freshman Siobhán Haughey in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.31, an NCAA 'B' cut.

The Wolverines also went one-for-two on relays, putting an exclamation point on the weekend with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay to end the meet. The quartet of Haughey, sophomore Clara Smiddy, sophomore Gabby DeLoof and A. DeLoof finished at 3:18.30, the fastest time in the NCAA this year by just one hundredth-of-a-second. The 200-yard medley relay team of A. DeLoof, sophomore Emily Kopas, Smiddy and Haughey took second at the start of the meet (1:40.36).

Michigan picked up some points in diving, as it went 2-3-5-6 in the one-meter competition. Junior Keegan McCaffrey led the quartet with a second-place finish (267.25), meeting the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard. Junior Allie Murphy was third (249.45), while fifth-year senior Nicole Honey was fifth (241.05), and senior Elena Ghormley was sixth (224.20).

U-M had three top-five finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke. Kopas was second (2:14.57 -- an NCAA 'B' cut), freshman Jamie Yeung was third (2:17.34), and sophomore Samantha Yeo was fifth (2:18.04). The other swimmer to claim a runner-up finish was sophomore Gillian Ryan in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:54.85).

Senior Marni Oldershaw recorded a team-best fourth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:22.68), while Smiddy took seventh to lead the team in the 100-yard butterfly (56.43).

The Michigan divers are next in action, competing at the USC Diving Invitational from Nov. 13-15 in Los Angeles, California. The next competition for the swimmers is AT&T Winter Nationals, set for Dec. 2-5 in Federal Way, Washington.
