Washington College Splits With Ursinus

When the Washington College and Ursinus College men's swim teams met a year ago, the Shoremen took the meet by winning the final relay in a fraction of a second. No such drama was needed today as the Shoremen won 12 of 14 events to roll past the Bears, 168-94, inside Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in conference meets with the win, while Ursinus fell to 6-4 and 3-3 with the loss.

The Shoremen bookended the meet by winning both relays. Sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]), senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and seniorAustin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) opened the meet with a winning time of 3:36.57 in the 400 medley relay. Freshman Cody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area), Mackenzie, junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal), and Yocum finished things off with a winning time of 3:17.16 in the 400 freestyle relay.

In between, Elliott, Yocum, junior Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), and sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) each won two individual events while Longenecker and Lee won one each. Elliott won the 100 backstroke in a Washington College season-best 53.04 and the 500 freestyle in 4:53.45. Yocum was a winner in 1:46.52 in the 200 freestyle and in 48.49 in the 100 freestyle. Morgan won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.92 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.08, while also placing second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:12.72. Hochstein won the 200 butterfly in 1:58.78 and the 400 individual medley in 4:26.7, while adding a second-place finish of 2:19.95 in the 200 breaststroke.

Longenecker won the 50 freestyle in 22.09 and was second in the 100 butterfly in 53.36. Lee won the 100 butterfly in 52.84. Mackenzie was second to a teammate in both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.20) and in the 100 freestyle (48.85). Junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside) added a second-place finish of 2:03.56 in the 200 backstroke, while freshman Finny Dorsch (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished second in the 400 individual medley in 4:33.67.

The Shoremen close out their dual meet schedule next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against McDaniel.


Visiting Ursinus College remained undefeated in dual meets this season with a 145-117 win over host Washington College in Centennial Conference women's swimming this afternoon inside Casey Swim Center. The Bears improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in conference meets with the win, while the Shorewomen dropped to 4-6 and 1-5 with the loss. 

Freshman Joelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) had a part in four of the Shorewomen's six first-place finishes in the loss. She won both the 100 backstroke (1:01.38) and the 200 backstroke (2:16.36) and led off the winning relays in both the 400 medley relay, which finished in a Washington College season-best 4:10.39, and the 400 freestyle relay, which won in 3:46.62. Joining Williamson in the 400 medley relay were freshmanJennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), and freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park). The 400 freestyle relay team was completed by Clune, senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), and Gorman.

Gorman added a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 25.37 and a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 55.46. Maxwell won the 200 individual medley in 2:17.81 and was second in the 200 butterfly (2:20.55) and in the 500 freestyle (5:29.66). 

Clune finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.80. Freshman Allie Grillo (Mt. Airy, Md./The Learning Community) placed second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:26.88, while freshman Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.98.

The Shorewomen close out their dual meet schedule next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against McDaniel.
