UC San Diego Drops Rival San Diego

The UC San Diego women’s swim team turned in the top time in 10 of 14 events en route to defeating city rival University of San Diego, 162-93, in the regular-season finale for both programs Saturday at the Canyonview Aquatic Center.

UCSD, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II, concluded its dual-meet schedule with a 9-3 record, while the Toreros finished at 0-6. The two diving events were not held on Saturday, with USD not having any divers this season.

The result marked a third straight victory for the Triton women against their Division I opponents, with UCSD now holding a 12-1-1 advantage over the past 14 meetings.

Sophomore Austine Lee and freshman Julia Toronczak (Santee/West Hills HS) each were fastest in a pair of individual events for UCSD. Lee won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.39) and the 50 freestyle (23.95). The latter time was her best this season. Toronczak hit the wall first in the 100 backstroke (57.06) and 200 back (2:05.19). Her mark in the shorter distance was just .01 seconds off her best. She also led off the first-place 200 medley relay to start the meet with her 50-yard backstroke leg, ahead of Jaimie Bryan, Jaclyn Amog and junior co-captain Colleen Daley (1:45.36).

Remaining individual winners for the Tritons were freshman Stephanie Sin in the 200 free (1:53.03), Bryan in the 200 breast (2:20.86), Amog in the 100 butterfly (56.47) and Maddy Huttner in the 200 individual medley (2:06.44). Huttner trailed USD’s Sarah Reierson at the 50- and 100-yard marks, before blazing 35.91 over the breaststroke leg to overtake her competitor (38.03) for good. Daley, Natalie Tang, Catherine Woo and Sin went 3:31.44 to place first in the 400 free relay.

UCSD swimmers gained maximum points with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay, and 1-2-3 individual sweeps in both the 100 breast and 50 free. Lee led Bryan (1:05.24) and fourth-year senior Eva Chen (1:05.31) to the wall in the former event, and Daley (24.17) and fellow sophomore Tang (24.60) in the latter.

Of 14 NCAA consideration qualifying times turned in by Tritons on the afternoon, two were season bests to improve credentials, those being Lee’s 50 free and Huttner’s 200 IM. Huttner was more than a full second faster than before (2:07.62). Chen’s B mark of 56.92 in the 100 fly came in her season debut in that race, and put her in the top 10 all-time at UCSD for that event, at eighth.

Senior Triton swimmers Amog, Chen, co-captain Summer Bennett, Megan Lee, Jessica Norgaard and Dari Watkins all competed at Canyonview for the final time.

Torero standout Keenan Lineback was a triple-winner in the 1000 free (10:26.12), 200 fly (2:05.01) and 500 free (5:06.23). Taylor Noonan, the only other senior on the USD roster, timed 53.00 seconds to narrowly out-touch Daley (53.01) and Woo (53.04) in an extremely tight 100 free.

UCSD swimmers and divers now have two and a half weeks remaining of preparation for the 2015 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference Championships in La Mirada, Feb. 18-21. The Triton men and women both enter the meet as six-time defending champions.
