George Washington Swept By George Mason

The George Washington men's swimming and diving team fell to Atlantic 10 foe George Mason, 165-90, on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The Colonials honored seniors Adam Rabe, Goran Koprivnjak, Joe Lipworth and Garrett Cottingham prior to the meet.

Rabe paced GW with two victories and a third-place finish. He won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 58.84 and 2:08.47, respectively. He teamed up with Koprivnjak, freshman Gustav Hokfelt and sophomore Bogdan Balteanu to finish third in the 200- medley relay (1:36.74).

Sophomore Liam Huffman and Hokfelt each added a first-place finish and runner-up effort individually. Huffman touched the wall first in the 1000- freestyle with a time of 9:43.64, while Hokfelt's top finish came in the 100- backstroke with a time of 52.85. Huffman and Hokfelt recorded second-best times in the 500- free (4:46.83) and 200- back (1:57.16), respectively.

Other strong performers included a runner-up finish by Koprivnjak in the 100- free (47.55) and a third-place effort in the 100- butterfly (52.62), and Balteanu's third place standing in the 200- free (1:46.08).

The Colonials will next compete at the A-10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 18-21. 


The George Washington women's swimming and diving team concluded the regular season with a 166-99 loss to Atlantic 10 foe George Mason on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The Colonials honored seniors Morgan Zebley, Janica Lee, Brittany Liedholm and Bianca Valencia prior to the meet.

Lee led the Colonials with the lone race victory of the day with a time of 2:10.02 in the 200-yard individual medley. Lee added runner-up efforts in the 200- breaststroke (2:26.19) and in the 200- medley relay (1:50.81) alongside Zebley, junior Maggie Hofstadter and freshman Phoebe Turner. Zebley added two more second-place finishes in the 100- freestyle (54.43) and the 100- butterfly (58.62), before teaming up with Turner, Hofstadter and sophomore Lauren Lawfor a second-place effort in the 400- free relay (3:41.48).

Other top performances included runner-up finishes by junior Madison Reinker the 1000- free (10:40.12) and 500- free (5:13.52), and Law's second-place time of 2:12.60 in the 200- individual medley.

GW finished in third seven times, by Valencia in the 100- fly (1:00.28) and 200- fly (2:09.58), freshman Iman Lee in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, Turner in the 50- free (25.25), Law in the 200- free (1:57.94) and junior Hannah Schaefer in the 1000- free (10:42.79).

The Colonials will compete next at the A-10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 18-21.
