Washington College Splits With Swarthmore

Junior Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional)turned in three individual first-place finishes as the visiting Washington College men's swim team won all 11 events in a 141.5-63.5 win over host Swarthmore in Centennial Conference men's swimming tonight. The Shoremen improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference meets with the win, while the Garnet fell to 2-4 and 1-3 with the loss.

Morgan won the 200 individual medley in a Washington College season-best 1:59.63 and also took first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:26.85 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.51. SeniorAustin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won both the 200 freestyle in 1:47.34 and the 500 freestyle in 4:58.48.

Sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), freshman Kevin Mackenzie(Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]), senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and freshman Cody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) each won one individual event for the Shoremen. Elliott won the 100 backstroke in 54.28, Mackenzie the 100 freestyle in 48.91, Lee the 100 butterfly in 53.17, and Weiler the 50 freestyle in 22.21.

Junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), Mackenzie, Lee, and Weiler opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:38.48. Mackenzie, Weiler, junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal), and Yocum finished the meet with a winning time of 1:28.91 in the 200 freestyle relay. 

Longenecker was second in two individual events, the 50 freestyle (22.46) and the 100 freestyle (49.80). Freshman Finny Dorsch (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) placed second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:40.59. 

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Ursinus.


Host Swarthmore College won eight of 11 events to post a 122-83 Centennial Conference women's swimming victory over visiting Washington College tonight. The Garnet improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in conference meets with the win. The Shorewomen slipped to 4-5 and 1-4 with the loss.

Sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) won one individual event and placed second in two others for the Shorewomen in the loss. She won the 1000 freestyle in 11:18.01 and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:19.73) and in the 500 freestyle (5:32.22). 

Freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) won the 100 breaststroke for the Shorewomen in 1:11.04. Washington ended the meet on a bigh note as senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), freshman Joelle Williamson(Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), freshman Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), and freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.34.

Williamson placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.81, Gorman added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 25.92, and freshman Allie Grillo (Mt. Airy, Md./The Learning Community) took second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:24.75.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Ursinus.
