VMI Sweeps Ferrum, Swept By Washington & Lee

One of the top competitors in the history of the VMI women's program closed out her home career with a bang Saturday, as Heather Magill set a new 3-meter diving school record for the second consecutive day to help the Keydets split a tri-meet with Washington & Lee and Ferrum at Clark King Pool in Lexington.

Magill, competing in her final meet at home and diving unopposed on both the 1 and 3-meter boards, posted a 3-meter score of 285.60 to just edge the 284.45 she put up Friday. In addition, her 1-meter effort of 261.40 moved her into fifth on the CCSA's ranking list entering the weekend.

The Keydets (3-5) would wind up winning the meet against Ferrum 145-78, but would drop a 184-63 decision to Washington & Lee. Washington & lee also defeated Ferrum 197-37.

Magill was joined in the win column by freshman McKenzie Raber, who won the 1000 free with a time of 11:16.56. Raber also finished second in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:32.59, and was one of four runner-up finishers on the day.

Natalie Rivas was second in the 50 free (25.45), Sophia DelBondio was the runner-up in the 100 free (57.06) and Gabbie Galvez was the second-place finisher in the 100 fly (1:03.46).

Christian Shaner won the 100 fly, pacing the VMI men's swimming and diving team to a split of a tri-meet Saturday at Clark King Pool in Lexington.

Shaner touched the wall in 52.66 for the near two-second victory over his closest competitor, helping the Keydets (2-6) down the Ferrum Panthers 171-32. Washington & Lee defeated the Keydets 185-54, while the Generals also knocked off Ferrum 201-27.

John Kelly and Christian Purdy posted runner-up finishes at Saturday's meet, with Kelly doing so in the 100 free and Purdy in the 50 free. Kelly timed in at 48.95, while Purdy's 21.99 effort was ahead of third-place teammate Mason Sedlacek's 23.01.

In addition, the 200 medley relay team of Ben Fields, Steven Seay, Shaner and Christian Rowcliffe finished third with a time of 1:44.35.
