Vermont Tops Rhode Island

The University of Vermont swimming and diving team won 12 of 16 events en route to a 174-123 victory over Rhode Island on UVM's Senior Day Saturday at Forbush Natatorium.

Prior to the meet, UVM honored seniors Estee Dilli, Ilsa Feierabend, Ashley Mitson, Samantha Russo and Katie Adams for their contributions to the program throughout their careers.

Rookie Kelly Lennon led the way for the Catamounts, claiming victories in both long distance freestyle events. She placed first in the 500 free in 5:12.82 and took the top spot in the 1000 with a time of 10:44.37.

Maggie Preston also claimed a pair of victories on the afternoon as the junior swept the diving competition with high scores of 229.71 in the 1-meter and 248.99 in the 3-meter.

Christa Weaver and Sarah Mantz both claimed wins in freestyle events. Weaver placed first in the 50 free (24.37), while Mantz earned a victory in the 200 (1:56.32).

UVM also swept the backstroke events, as Courtney Gray swam to a first-place finish in the 100 (59.60), and Feierabend earned the top spot in the 200 (2:06.36).

Shannon Cowley and Andie Blaser registered the other two individual victories for Vermont. Cowley clocked in at 1:06.26 in the 100 breast for the win, while Blaser notched a first-place showing in the 100 fly in 58.23.

Vermont also swept both relay events at the meet. Gray, Cowley, Blaser and Weaver took the top spot in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.46. In the 200 free relay, Blaser, Kira Hancock, Mantz and Weaver swam to a first-place showing in 1:38.92.

With the win, Vermont improves to 8-2 on the year, while Rhode Island falls to 6-4-1 overall.

Select Catamount swimmers will compete at the Middlebury Invitational on January 30 and 31 as a tune-up for the America East Championships, which begin on February 12 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
