UMBC Swept By East Carolina

UMBC fell to East Carolina on Saturday, as the men were defeated 154-145 and the women 188-112. The Retrievers and Pirates took it all the way to the wire, as the men squeaked by with the last relay of the day.

The women's 200 medley relay team (Amanda Day, Emily Escobedo, Lauren Day, Kristie Langford) kicked off the meet with a second place finish in a time of 1:46.92. The women also took second in the 400 free relay (Langford, Atkinson, Frediani, and Caulfield) with a time of 3:33.64.

Alissa Caulfied picked up a stellar come-from-behind victory in the 200 free. She was behind for most of the race, but pulled ahead in the final stretch, to out-touch ECU's Bailie Monahan with a time of 1:55.58. Caulfield also picked up a second place finish before the first break, finishing the 50 free in a time of 24.82.

Catherine Frediani and Emily Escobedo both earned second place finishes in the 100 back and 100 breast respectively. Frediani finished with a time of 59.44, while Emily touched the wall in 1:04.08.

Escobedo opened things up after the break with a win in the 200 breast. Emily touched the wall in 2:17.58. Stephanie Romano followed that up with a slim win in the 500 free. Romano just out-touched Chew from ECU with a time of 5:06.30.

On the boards, Coco Darelius took first place in the 1 meter dive with a score of 261.15.

On the men's side, their 200 medley team of Nikola Trajkovic, Leo Endres, Philip Adejmo and Lauri Kaei finished in second with a time of 1:34.37.

Andrew McKissick and Gregor Sporlein took gold in the 200 fly and 50 free. McKissick won the fly in a time of 1:55.29, while Sporlein won the sprint in 21.46. McKissick earned a second place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.15. Sporlein was just out-touched in the 200 free by seven tenths of a second.

Sporlein got UMBC going after the break with a win in the 100 free. Gregor touched the wall in 46.48. Freshman Miles Ruttan helped the Retriever cause, placing second in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.83.

Jonas Gutzat got his first win of the day in the 500 free. Gutzat finished with a time of 4:37.19.

Ryan Green swept the diving competition for the Retrievers, scoring a 306.30 on the 1 meter and 299.47 on the 3 meter boards.

The meet would come down to the final relay for the men, and ECU just out lasted UMBC as the team of Kaei, Doll, Breen and Sporlein took second in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:04.92.
