University of Connecticut sophomore swimmer Sophie Nothnagle (Victor, N.Y.) set a pool record, while three UConn divers took the top spots in the 3-meter, as the Huskies defeated Boston College, 161-122, on Saturday at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. Connecticut improved to 3-1 in dual meets this season with the victory.
Nothnagle’s record breaking time came in the 200-yard butterfly, which she won with a time of 2:02.88. The Connecticut swimmer also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.62).
Junior diver Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) totaled 282.75 points to win the 3-meter, while sophomore Alexandra Butera (Havertown, Pa.) earned a second-place finish with a score of 273.45. Sophomore diver Michelle Kalupski (Chicago, Ill.) also had a productive day in the event, finishing third after scoring a 265.65. Urbanus produced the top score (298.57) among Connecticut divers in the 1-meter, as she took home fourth place in the event.
Senior swimmer Katy Munzenmaier (Lake George, N.Y.) continued her strong season Saturday against the Eagles, as she tallied two individual victories. She won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.31 before capturing her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle (52.74).
The Huskies jumped out to a lead early on the meet, winning the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomores Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) and Tara O’Prey (Ridley Park, Pa.) teamed up with senior Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Sammi Bassman (Austin, Texas) to earn the victory with a completed time of 1:46.39. The Connecticut team of sophomores Madeleine Hoopes (Greensburg, Pa.), Samantha Park (Washington Crossing, Pa.) and Jordan Drake (Marietta, Ga.) and junior Laura Ruttan (Stittsville, Ontario) finished second in the race after swimming it in 1:51.01.
“We were especially pleased with our swims today coming off of hard training,” UConn swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “Sophie setting a pool record was outstanding, and our women dominated the events with a solid effort.”
Other individual winners on Saturday were Pigot, Pedersen, Ruttan, sophomores Michelle Faykes (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Jaimie Lynn Brookover (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and junior Laura Hyland (Southport, England). Pigot won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.75, while Pedersen captured first place in the 100-yard backstroke (58.61). Ruttan notched a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.93.
Faykes earned her victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:42.15), while Brookover won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.12. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hyland beat all swimmers after swimming it in 2:25.62.
The Huskies hosted a Pink Out throughout Saturday’s meet, as swimmers, divers and coaches all wore pink in support of breast cancer research. Friends and families at the meet were encouraged to donate to the cause, and UConn will continue to collect money for donations throughout the next two weeks. Connecticut returns to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. for Senior Day against Seton Hall. A total of 10 senior swimmers will be honored prior to the meet against the Pirates.
