N.C. State Sweeps Minnesota

Through two days of competition, the NC State swimming and diving team defeated Minnesota inside the Casey Aquatic Center Saturday morning.

The No. 8 Wolfpack men defeated the No. 23 Minnesota men 201-127 to retain its perfect record, while the 16th-ranked NC State women earned a 189-145 victory over the 11th-ranked Gopher women.

A total of 11 pool records were set by the Pack in the two days of competition. 

Wolfpack Relays
In both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay events, NC State set two new Casey Aquatic Center pool records. The men’s team of Andreas Scheillerup, Derek Hren, Soren Dahl and David Williams swam a time of 1:27.97, while the women’s squad of Alexia Zevnik, Kayla Brumbaum, Ashlyn Koletic and Riki Bonnema recorded a time of 1:40.02. 

The Pack also grabbed the second place title in both relay events. 

NC State finished the two-day dual off with wins in the men’s and women’s 400 free relays as well as two more Casey Aquatic Center pool records. 

The quartet of Zevnik, Natalie Labonge, Lotta Nevalinen and Bonnema swam a 3:20.26 to take first place honors in the women’s event, while the team of Ryan Held, Simonas Bilis, Scheillerup and Williams swam the fastest time in the men’s heat with a 2:55.39.

Individual Medley
Christian McCurdy captured first-place honors in the men’s 400 IM, as he touched the wall with a 3:52.09.

Freestyle Watch
Bilis captured the top honor as well as a new Casey pool record in the men’s 100 free with a time of 43.60, with Held trailing just behind him posting a time of 44.75 to take second place. 

Labonge finished second in the women’s 100 free with a time of 50.19, while Bonnema touched the wall at 51.05 to take third place. 

Rachel Muller won the women’s 500 free with a time of 4:49.56 while Anton Ipsen swam the fastest time in the men’s event with a 4:32.47.

Back It Up
Zevnik swam a time 1:56.21 to take first place in the women’s 200 backstroke and earn a new Casey Aquatic Center pool record. Hannah Freyman finished second in the event with a 2:02.46.

NC State took first, second and third in the men’s 200 back, as Hennessey Stuart swam a 1:43.56 to take first and claim a new Casey pool record, while Stephen Coetzer and Jacob Siar swam times of 1:47.77 and 1:48.70 to notch the other two honors. 

Breaststroke 
Brumbaum and Addisynn Bursch finished second and third in the women’s 200 breast with times of  2:14.41 and 2:21.30, while McCurdy and Hren swam the second and third fastest times in the men’s event, touching the wall at 2:01.69 and 2:01.83.

Fly Into the Sky
Koletic and Krista Duffield finished second and third in the women’s 100 butterfly with times of 54.67 and 55.23, while Dahl captured first place in the men’s event with a time of 47.37. 

Springboard Action
Rachel Mumma won the women’s one-meter competition with a score of 312.60.

Wolfpack Improvement
NC State recorded 14 new top times for the 2014-15 season. The 'Wolfpack Top Times' consists of the top five times in a given season for each individual event, and the top three times in relay events.  

Up Next
NC State will return to action when it hosts UNC-Chapel Hill on Jan. 31 inside the Casey Aquatic Center for its last dual meet of the 2014-15 season. Competition is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
