VMI Tops North Carolina A&T

Heather Magill broke her own school record in the 3-meter diving event, while Gabbie Galvez teamed with three freshmen to break the school record in the 200 free relay as VMI women's swimming and diving downed the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 134-88, in Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) action Friday at VMI's Clark King Pool. Overall, the Keydets (2-4) won 10 of the day's 13 events and had an 11th possible winner disqualified during a relay.

Magill, competing unopposed in her final weekend of collegiate competition at home, notched a score of 284.45 points to best her old mark by nearly 20 full markers. It made her an NCAA zone qualifier for the third consecutive year, and the mark ranks third in the CCSA coming into the weekend. Magill also took part in the 1-meter event, scoring 257.65 markers there.

The day's last event also saw a school record, with Galvez, Natalie Rivas, Haley Scott and Sophia DelBondio touching the wall in 1:42.51 to win the 200 free relay. It was the second time this season that quartet had reset the mark, as they also did it at Loyola on Nov. 8.

Rivas proved to be the meet's only triple winner, as she added 50 and 100 free victories to her relay performance. In the 100, she clocked in at 56.73 seconds to prevail and in the 50, she missed the Keydet school record by just .04 as she touched the wall in 25.33 seconds.

Galvez also was a dual winner Friday, as she won the 100 fly by over two seconds (1:03.59).

Freshman McKenzie Raber continued to add to her sterling first collegiate season, as she dominated the 500 (5:41.14) and 1000 free (11:20.69) races, while Mackenzie Perkins rallied late to win the 100 backstroke in 1:05.23.

Prior to the meet, eight seniors from the two VMI swimming and diving programs were recognized on the pool deck.

VMI swimming and diving will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets play host to Washington & Lee and Ferrum in a tri-meet at Clark King Pool. Action for both the men's and women's programs gets underway at 1 p.m.
